Why are you participating on this message board?

For me, my son has been dating a Catholic girl (who we love to death) for several years. This past spring, after saying I’m not going to be Catholic for years, he said, “I might become Catholic”. His girlfriend had given him Rome Sweet Home by the Hahn’s to read.

I figured that I should learn about Catholicism so I can at least carry on a conversation with him. I’ve started reading books about Catholicism from both Catholic and Protestant apologist, trying to dismiss any blatant propaganda from both sides.

That is what brought me here. We have very few Catholics in my city and the only Catholic family I know is that of my sons girlfriend. I figured I could get my questions answered on this board.

I participate because I find the topics interesting and I like finding commonalities between the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod.

As a former Protestant…

I came to learn about Catholicism and gain a deeper Christian faith. I found a depth to many of the posts about why Catholicism believed what it did and why it more closely represented the truth of the Christian faith than other denominations.

There is a lot of chaff which needs to be sorted through. Admittedly as my faith has progressed and the basic questions become common knowledge for me, I have participated in the “chaff” more than one probably should…

Thanks for asking!

For sheer economy, I’ll quote my introduction post:

Hello everyone! Going through some transitions that have lead me to question and re-identify with what it means to be Christian. Over the years I have bounced from one church to another, never really finding anything that felt right. I have come to the conclusion that my Protestant upbringing, for many years, blinded me from looking at the Catholic Church with any form of objectivity. I don’t know any Catholics in my day to day life, so I thought this would be a good place to start to learn, and to shed my bias.

I look forward to talking with you!
I have found myself really to be embarrassingly ignorant of Catholic beliefs and so I have been researching and trying to shed that ignorance.

I saw a bumper sticker for our local Catholic radio station while I was eating lunch one day and tuned in. Catholic Answers was on. And it was pretty neat. Always up for learning, I listened in to hear responses to people’s questions. I used to take my lunch breaks at work during the evening broadcast, and when I couldn’t I would get home around the midnight re-broadcast and listen in the parking lot of my apartment.

One day they mentioned there was a forum, so, I signed up.

I was on CARM for years…heard about how horrible Catholic Answers was. I was told they are a bunch of liars over here, perverting the true gospel. So that caused me to explore the site. I had never heard of Catholic answers prior to that.

Anyway, the forum was not allowing new members. So I lurked for many years. Found it to be a very informative site. And to my amazement, the folks here acted much more Christ-like than the “true Christians” at CARM. That math wasn’t adding up for me… lol.

I joined shortly after coming into full communion with the Catholic Church in 2008.
My Dad’s family was Catholic, but only my Aunt’s family practiced the Catholic faith.
My mother was Lutheran and my sister and I were baptized and confirmed in the
Episcopal church. My parents were not church going people and never discussed
religion much. I was always curious about the Catholic faith and after being a nonpracticing Christian (as far as belonging to a church or attending Sunday services) for over 25 years, I decided to contact a nearby Catholic church and studied with the woman from RCIA. for 8 weeks (I had been studying about Catholicism) off and on for about
10 years) and was received into the Catholic church in July of 2008.

I joined CAF to meet other Catholics and to ask questions I might have being a new
Catholic. I have really enjoyed CAF and have enjoyed the friendships I have made
here and enjoy the discussions.

It has been a good support group for me.

Started coming here as a lurker many years ago when I was still Catholic. And have been coming back over the years when I had a question(s) about a Catholic view on something, etc… And I keep coming around for the same reason, and to get the conservative Catholic take on all manner of issues.

When I met my now wife, she was Catholic. Some things were a bit strange to me like ordering the vegetarian pizza (after she assured me a few days ago she loves meat) on a Friday when we went on a date. I turned to Uncle google and that led me here.

Long story short. Today she is very Protestant and think I waste my life on this forum 😃

Originally, I came here to share the message of Islam (I used to be a muslim). Now as a christian, I come here to learn about Catholicism. Something about religions fascinates me; I can’t really explain why. I even bought a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I like to learn about various religions.

Nowadays, the reason I come here is to pray over prayer requests. I like to go to the Prayer Intentions forum in order to pray for people. That’s something the Lord has told me to do. I like the community, too. There are hardly any trolls on CAF and I like that.

As an inactive/former Catholic, i enjoy a forum with clean language and the occasional thread that is intellectually satisfying to read. I am also a history nerd and the history of western civilization can’t be told without including the Catholic Church.

That’s an interesting story. You’ve been here a long time. 👍

My longtime SO has returned to the RCC after being nonreligious for years, thus I’m here to keep up with what’s going on in the Catholic world. I’ve always been around Catholics and am fairly well-versed about the faith, but thought I’d take a “refresher course.” Things haven’t changed.

I came here as a Protestant because I had started to wonder about all the divisions in Christianity. One thing that was indisputable is that at one time the Church was more united. From a Protestant perspective the evil Catholic Church had forced this unity and a bunch of ‘unbiblical’ doctrines. I was familiar with the Protestant side and wanted to understand the Catholic perspective.

Interesting topics and insight from many perspectives - to echo others’ comments, learning about a particular subject from various world’s religions (even though it’s a Catholic Forum). I do have an interest in world’s religions and it’s interesting to see the same thing from the perspective of another spiritual path.

To see other people’s comments on my church and, if the case, why they hate or do not understand what I truly believe.

I have not been surprised by the comments from whomever of what I do not believe.

As I always, to give my conviction of what we believe.

Kind regards.

I came here when I was still identifying as a Catholic for the community and support. These days, I still find it interesting to read the intellectual discussions even if I don’t have much to add.

I used to participate more and ask a lot of questions on this forum, but haven’t done so as much recently because most of my questions were answered to my satisfaction in the past couple of years.

However, I still regularly listen to Catholic radio (Oklahoma Catholic Broadcasting Network) and gain insights that help me in my daily Christian life.

I also want to thank all the Catholics who were patient and understanding in answering my various questions. You really exhibited the patience of Job in your dealings with me and I will be forever in your debt. May the Lord richly bless all of you. 👍

I am happy in my current faith tradition but sometimes feel the call to consider Catholicism, although I still have a few obstacles to overcome.

While strong at times and at other times faint, I seem to constantly feel drawn to Catholicism like the drumbeat in the movie ‘Jumanji’, which is why I keep returning like a cat to the front door of the nice people who feed it. 🙂

👍 Let us know if you ever make the swim across the Tiber. We’re waiting for you 🙂

I didn’t come into full communion with the Catholic Church until I was 56. The Holy Spirit will guide you.
