To any Byzantine Catholics, etc…
I’m a bit confused as to the difference between the Catholic rites. Are the differences along the lines of cultural differences in the Liturgy, or what?
I understand the non-Latin rites are somewhat more autonomous. That in mind, what role does the pope play?

I wish I could ask better questions, but really, I’m too ignorant to!

The Byzantine churches have the same theology and spirituality as the Orthodox churches they derive from.

It is understood that the Byzantine churches would disappear into their mother churches should a reunion between East and west ever take place! However unlikely that may appear to be at present.

The one distinguishing difference between Byzantine Catholic and Orthodox is that the Catholics currently are in communion with Rome. Secondarily, they have permitted themselves to become administered from Rome as well, and this has had some unfortunate results in the past as Byzantine Catholic practice and teaching has diverged from the mother churches to some extent.

Rome has directed the Eastern churches to recover their own traditions. This has resulted in no small measure of confusion and dismay as Eastern Catholics are finding themselves adjusting to their new role. First as representatives of the east in the Catholic Communion and secondly as a possible model for the reunion of the churches.

Archbishop Elias Zoghby once stated this new role succinctly when he offered this brief statement in 1995 and it was subscribed to by 24 of the 26 bishops present at the 1995 Holy Synod of the Melkite Catholic church: 1. I believe everything which Eastern Orthodoxy teaches. 2. I am in communion with the Bishop of Rome as the first among the bishops, according to the limits recognized by the Holy Fathers of the East during the first millennium, before the separation.

If you want to know more about Byzantine Catholic beliefs, you may purchase any theological work written by (or for) Orthodox.

Some Catholic authors who can be of some help are:

Archbishop Joseph Raya* The Face of God

Thomas Cardinal Spidlik The Spirtuality of the Christian East

*and anything by Father Casimir Kucharek or Father George A. Maloney sj
