Question for Protestants(Mainly Methodists)

Since, the title of the thread was “Question for Protestants(Mainly Methodists)” and OP was relating his experience to sunday school in a Methodist church, one would easily come to the conclusion that he was asking in regards to Methodist belief and teaching.

But what do I know?

YIKES!! All this whore talk. In my years of experience visiting the UMC I never heard whore of babylon, some may have thought as some did get riled up when demeaning the RCC.
I was just trying to see if it taught or learned or what??

My wife and her family are Methodist. She was raised in an east Texas FUMC where I hear the same “shots” if you will. Not just from her family so I know it isn’t just them.

Come to think of it, some time around the Peloponesian War, when I was a teenager, I dated a virulently anti-Catholic Methodist. Shudder. He was of Scottish extraction and used to say stuff like “Kick the Pope!” We went to an Anglo-Catholic Church one Sunday to check out this strange phenomenon, and he held the Eucharistic bread and wine in his mouth until the service was over and then spat them out in the garden! Sheesh! I guess some Methodists ARE (or WERE) anti-Catholic.

I went to a Methodist church for two years. I never heard anything anti-Catholic. I grew up in the Episcopal church, and again, nothing anti-Catholic. The most I remember hearing about the Catholic Church was that they were great people, but their theology was “messed up” in some
respects.

The “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church” is included in the creed because the other meaning of “catholic” is “universal”. That is what Methodists and other Protestant denominations mean when they say “catholic” in the creeds.

It is mainly during the class discussions, someone managed to work in well I hate how Catholics this or that.
I don’t know. I realize the universal part of it but maybe I am naive but where in " one holy catholic and apostolic church" does it say unless you disagree. They adopted parts (communion once a month) and dropped numerous other parts, why? In all my time there I never could figure it out. All I came to realize was that I was missing something so I came back but want to understand. Getting long winded here, sorry.

If you could clear this up for me, I don’t know if you previously stated it, but are you in communion with the Catholic Church and attending a Methodist community on the side or are you Methodist? I’m confused.

I was raised Catholic, married a Methodist, attended her church regularly until 2006. Reverted to RCC. I occasionally attend “Sunday School” upon her request and if the topic of study sounds interesting. The latest was to be a study in the 4 major non-Christian world religions. This past Sunday it was Buddhism.
One member said we as Christians can learn alot from from these different reliogions, which I think is true, but then she went on to say how hypocritical we Christians are. Especially her Catholic friends who “can yuck it up Friday and Saturday, confess on Sunday and all is good”. I guess I was using this forum to vent because I can do it anonymously. I do not want to be confrontational at their church or mine for that matter.

You seem to be in the same position as my dad, but he hasn’t come home yet…He’s been Methodist for about 10 years. I pray every night for him, my mother and sister and all Methodists.

My mom (a Methodist) has actually complained to me about that when trying to discredit the Catholic faith. It’s a shame though, because the reason behind my mom and the women at your wife’s Methodist community is due to bad catechizing/witness of Catholics in the 60s/70s (assuming the women is from that era).

These people are well-intentioned, I’m sure, but discrediting others to boost one’s own image is never a good thing. When I hear a lot of people criticizing Christ’s Church, much of it to me, seems naive, for the simple reason that the Catholic Church is not a “Hall of Saints,” but a “Hospital for Sinners” as someone worded it. We all make mistakes and take our Sacraments for granted at times, it’s a shame though…

That is VERY much contrary to Methodist teaching, to spout off anti-Catholic propaganda…Father Wesley must be spinning in his grave, he was indeed very ecumenical in his outlook!!
The only thing I can imagine, is that this is a person (people?) who have been steeped in an anti-Catholic stance from somewhere else, and it has poisoned their ideas about Catholics.
I apologize profusely, on behalf of the vast majority of us Methodists, who were [ahem!! cough!! cough!!!] “not brought up in a barn”, as my grandmother used to say…
That kind of speech is very thoughtless, extremely rude, and totally unChristian. (And you have my permission to say so, if this sort of 3-day-old carp is brought up in your presence again!!).
