Question for struggling alcoholic men and their wives

For the men - what prayers are most meaningful to you as you struggle to get and stay sober? Do you have a favorite saint?

For their wives - what prayers do you pray for your husbands and do you have a favorite saint to pray to?

Thanks for your help. I plan to pass this information on to some dear friends who are just beginning their journey toward sobriety for him and normalcy for her.

I don’t have a lot of personal experience with alcoholism, but I know that Blessed Matthew Talbot is a patron of addicts and alcoholics.

I also know St Monica is powerful. She prayed for 40-odd years for her son to give up his wild ways. He did … and became St Augustine the great bishop and theologian and Doctor of the Church!

Other good saints to pray to are St Jude and St Rita (patrons of so-called ‘impossible cases’ which need supernatural help)

Debbie your friends are in my prayers. I was in this situation myself (as the praying wife) until last year. Going to adoration of the Blessed Sacrament really helped me keep my sanity. If your friend and her husband would do this together I know they could over come any obstacle. I also said the rosary frequently.

Dear Debbie
Last September I began a string of novenas to Father Alfred Pampalon. A friend of mine gave me a novena pamplet. He apparently has great effect for those trying to get away from the ravages of addiction. He is a priest who was helping alcoholics in Quebec, Canada It has been effective at both my home and in the home of a friend of mine. I in fact must write to the postulator for the cause of beatification for this holy man.
I have also prayed that the Holy Spirit be able to open a crack into the soul of person I was praying for and that the light of Jesus fill that person with grace and the light for conversion.

On the one hand, I hope the alcoholic has made a solid committment to Alacoholics Anonymous. On the other hand, I hope the co-alcoholics has made a committment to the AlAnon Family Groups. And on the gripping hand, the children of this couple should make a committment to AlaTeen.

Most AA meetings use the Serenity Prayer, and the Protestent version of the Lord’s Prayer. The Saint Francis prayer shows up at times.
