sspx.org/miscellaneous/papal_tiara.htm The SSPX’s website claims that the SSPX “staunchly defended the true rights of the papacy”, but the SSPX separated itself from the Papacy.

sspx.org/SSPX_FAQs/q1_sspx.htm The SSPX website doesn’t shy away from it’s foundation by a man in the mid to late part of the 20th century.

Confused and I don’t understand, but would like to.
  1. How can the SSPX be both "pro"papacy and "anti"papacy at the same time?
  2. Why choose to be a member of the SSPX instead of the Catholic Church founded by Jesus Christ in the early part of the first century?
I am hopeful that soon the SSPX will unite with the Catholic Church :yup:

Now I am even more confused as this was moved from Non-Catholic to Traditional Catholic causing me to have a new question.
  1. Are the SSPX considered Catholic even though they have rejected authority of the Pope by separating themselves from the Church?

The SSPX are Catholic. It is not a sin to go to SSPX masses.

This topic has literally been beat to death so hard, the guts are hanging out.

Maybe you should just do wee search on the forum about these topics?

To the OP, your questions are based on false assumptions and false dichotomies. Are you a KC by any chance? That wonderful organization was also founded by a man: Father McGivney. The same holds true for the Jesuits, Franciscans, Dominicans, etc. I agree with the above suggestion. Search through some of the threads and you can lean more about the SSPX issue and why your questions have no answer.

Hi ComeHome2Rome.

It sounds from your questions like you are happy to be wherever you are. Why not just leave it alone? Does it need to be said that those like me who assist at SSPX Masses would reject all of your premises?

Thank you all for responding. Someone has contacted me via e-mail and answered each of my questions & follow up questions re: SSPX. Although I still don’t get it all the way, I do now understand more than I did before. Thank you.

The SSPX is not against the pope. They are obedient to the pope just not obedient to modernists who changed the Mass to what it is today. Can you blame them?

If they were/are so obedient to the Pope then:
  1. Why do they have no faculties?
  2. Why is it that there are discussions to bring them back, if they never left?
  3. Why’d His Grace ordain four men as Bishops despite the Pope say not to?
This situation is hardly ideal. I want them to come back into the Church, and I pray for a resolution. But to say they’re obedient to the Pope is a bit of a stretch.

Obedience only in area of agreement is not obedience. It is coincidence. It is only when we don’t agree can we acknowledge that we respect authority.

I attend a SPPX serviced church and we pray for the pope and the church daily as was the case for any who offer the Tridentine Mass.

As stated by someone …this topic has been bashed to death.

Yes, actually. Isn’t “I know better than the Church” how Luther got started?

If they’re so disobedient to the Pope then:
  1. Why did the excommunications get lifted?
  2. Why do they openly support the Pope and pray for him?
  3. Why do they keep talking to Rome?
  4. Why can we attend their Mass?
It’s easy to do a back and forth with this. I’ve seen more disobedience in my local parish than in the SSPX. So why isn’t my pastor in the news and labelled a dissenter who is disobedient?

Yes, things aren’t ideal. But to go back and forth about just how “disobedient” they appear to be isn’t good.

Hummm…

I am applaude by such a comparisson.
It is a cheap shot that is used from time to time. In fact, I think we may need a new Godwin’s Law corollary. Any SSPX thread that goes on long enough will eventually see the name Luther.

I’m not SSPX. Never been to one of their Masses, though I have been invited to do so. I know a fair number of them and have talked to them at length.

It’s hard to understand SSPX if one wasn’t aware of some of the dislocations of the post-VII era. One day the Church was one way, then all of a sudden it was another way, in many respects. Abuses abounded, and it was hard for a lot of people to trust some priests, nuns, bishops even. Some segments of the Church became essentially political.
I was young then, and perhaps more flexible. My father, though, was older, and the Church to which he had been devoted for so long suddenly became almost bizarre at times. Dissidents were everywhere, preaching dissent as if it was Catholicism. Sometimes one really had to wonder whether some of the stranger masses were even valid, they were so idiosyncratic.

You almost had to be there. My father never did join the SSPX. But he was mortified to see orders of sisters “go secular” and decline. He was upset to see openly heretical “theologians” treated as if they somehow were the Church of the future. He had worked awfully hard to get Jesuit educations for his children, only to see the Jesuits leave in droves and become apologists for the likes of Teddy Kennedy when Kennedy supported abortion. He saw Catholic education decline so much that he and my mother felt it absolutely necessary to teach us the Catechism at home because it was certainly not taught in the local Catholic school. It was hard for him and people like him.

Well, some people, mostly older, were drawn to the SSPX because it was what they were used to. SSPX never did condemn the Pope. Their priests had apostolic succession and everybody knew that. Their sacraments were valid. It wasn’t as if they weren’t. The SSPX, in my opinion, was almost an expression of a failure on their part to realize that the Church, as represented by dissidents and experimenters, would not stay that way forever. The abuses would die down and the abusers would eventually just leave, which a lot of them did. But SSPX people couldn’t bring themselves to think so.

So, now the SSPX people have raised two entire generations, and taught them what they, themselves were taught, not by some crazy dissident, but by the Church itself. They’re not heretics. They do accept the Pope. They teach straight from the Catechism. But they are, perhaps understandably, reluctant to place themselves under the authority of bishops who might split them up, forbid them to say the Tridentine Mass or even force them to say “rainbow masses”.

You just have to say they’re Catholics…real ones. They just got themselves out on a limb a long time ago and are still leery of what would happen to them if they agreed to come under the authority of some bishop who might not be all that orthodox. After all, how would it have been to be under Weakland? Under Mahoney?

In speaking to SSPXers, I find a lot of respect for, and hope in, Pope Benedict. And rightly so. He has taken a lot of steps to reform liturgical practice, to reform seminaries, to select truly orthodox and faithful bishops. You can’t understand the SSPX, early on or now, without understanding the history.

One day, they will be fully within the bosom of the Church. Of that, I am convinced.
