Question for the Priests concerning vestments

Are you responsible for purchasing your own vestments?

i noticed from the cassock topic and other things i have seen that vestments for Mass, as well as every day “priestly wear” seems to be fairly pricy. Is that true, or have i seen skewed numbers? How many of , for instance, chasubles do you really need to own?

the individual priest does not need to own any chasubles, only his own clerical suit or cassocks, the latter generally have to be custom tailored and can be pricey, but wear well, so I hear. the chasubles and related items in liturgical colors generally belong to the parish, unless the priest has received them as gifts such as at ordination, and the parish needs at a minimum one set in each liturgical color, plus albs for all ministers, servers etc. who wear them. many priest do own chasuble and matching items stole etc. in each color for convenience and proper fit. they range from budget pricing to hundreds of dollars depending on trim, design etc. Most priests usually obtain the more expensive items as gifts from familyu.

Most priests these days have a set of their own vestments. True, most parishes have some on hand, but in many cases they are terribly out-dated (stuff from the 60’s and 70’s) are in terrible shape, or don’t fit. I’m 6’3 and 245lbs, the chasubles hanging in our parish sacristy or for someone who appears to have been around four foot tall!

Vestments and clerical garb does get a bit expensive, that’ why I make my own clerical shirts. I get some black Dickies work shirts, and modify the collars myself into a Roman collar. they last much longer, look better, wear more comfortably and only cost $16.00 instead of $40.00.

That’s a great idea. How do you modify the collar? Do you have to sew, or is it a relatively simple process?
