Question for those who practice NFP

We had about 8-10 days of planned abstinence.
We have 3 children and I do not want a new baby, but my husband would necessarily more children…

We are just learning Billings, and currently abstaining about 60% of my cycle. We’re being pretty conservative while we figure it out. It’s OK since we are mostly pretty exhausted with two toddlers running us ragged anyway. 😛

I really think that NFP promoters need to be a little more honest up front about these things, instead of claiming it’s so easy and fun. They say stuff like you’re only fertile for three or four days … Which may technically be true, but your potential fertile time is much longer than that!

We practice the Marquette method along with making sure it coincides with mucus and temp. The rules have an algorithm that determines the start of your fertile phase (earliest peak in the last six cycles minus six days…so an early peak of 12 means we abstain starting day 6. We use the first five days (don’t knock it til you turn of the lights and try it) and 9 days of my 12 day luteal phase. So about 50% of the time. Half on and half off.

I have found that the teachers (Couple to Couple has a big problem with this) make everything sound perfect and they want you to think that you are going to have some miniscule number of days of abstinence. The fact is, it varies pretty widely. You should read a book called “The Sinner’s Guide to NFP” by Simcha Fisher. She tells it like it is and actually makes fun of a lot of the teachers that paint these overly-rosy pictures of NFP. Nevertheless, she is quick to discuss the fact that the sacrifices are worth it.

A lot of the hormonal birth control methods (Nuva Ring in particular) have been making it into even mainstream women’s magazines with big articles on the lack of disclosure about blood clots and cardiac risks. When you consider all of the risks with artificial birth control (such as healthy young girls dropping dead from a blood clot they were far too young to likely have naturally) it makes some of the more careful and conservative abstinence estimates of NFP look like a cakewalk. I’ll take dealing with a little more abstinence than I prefer over a blood clot any day!
