I bought Catholic Questions, Catholic Answers by Fr. Kenneth Ryan.
Is this a good book to further my understanding of Catholicism? Are there any other source that are good? I’m thinking maybe from a former protestant perspective (so I can see why someone would go from protestantism to Catholicism). What books/resources best argue against anti-catholic stereo-types… Because I grew-up Southern Baptist and a lot of my family is So. Bap. or United Methodist (a few Independent and Primitive Baptists too) so they ain’t exactly pro-catholic lol and I’d like to be able to defend myself or at least stand toe-to-toe with their misconceptions on Catholics.
Thank you in advance 😃

And when they mention statues and crucifixes, ask them if they have a cross in or outside their church. Ask them if they set up nativity scenes under their Christmas trees. Is Mary there ?

I got a co-worker good one time. I invited him to join me at Mass one Sunday. he said he couldn’t because he was raised Baptist. He explained it would be disrespectful to his parents if he were to worship anywhere but a Baptist church. I then asked him if all those who left the Catholic Church during the Reformation were being disrespectful to their Catholic parents and grandparents.

He didn’t know what to say. 🙂

First of all GOD BLESS YOU!!!

“Not 100 in the United States hate the Roman Catholic church, but millions hate what they mistakenly think the Roman Catholic Church is.”–Bishop Fulton J. Sheen

I don’t know which books to recommend but places to start would be with “famous” converts to Catholicism: Dr. Scott Hahn (former Presbyterian minister) and Tim Staples (convert and apologist for Catholic Answers).

You can get a FREE copy of Scott Hahn’s conversion story on CD or download at www.catholicity.com. Click on “Free Catholic CDs.”

Hope this helps!!🙂

Thanks guys! Especially for the websites and the free downloads!! I’m kinda between jobs now (I’m back in school but since my school schedule is so odd it’s hard to find a job 😦 ), so the free stuff is awesome 😃

Be careful of the Fisheater’s site. The page you’re taken to with the link given is fine, but if you delve into the index, you find Fisheaters departing from the mind of the Church, regarding the post-Conciliar popes, the post-conciliar liturgy, etc, the post-conciliar rite of exorcism, etc. (no rite of the Church is worthless, because the Church cannot propose a rite that does not do what the Church purports that it does). It also provides links to radical dissident groups such as Traditio. I would avoid it and go to EWTN, for example, which can answer a lot of your questions.

Oh? Thanks for the heads up.

You are a Baptist? I was too, though I spent five years as an Anglican. My family didn’t give me much grief. I hope yours doesn’t either. I will pray for you.

For arguing against anti-Catholic stereotypes, I would recommend Karl Keating’s "Catholicism and Fundamentalism’ which gives a very thorough discussion of each of the usual suspects (Mary, purgatory, “worshiping” the saints, the Eucharist, etc.) Another good book is Scott Hahn’s Rome Sweet Home where he and his wife Kimberly describe their thought processes in their conversions.

While there is no question that their discussion forum contains problematic views, I have always found the web pages an excellent resource. I would highly recommend it to the OP.

Discussion forums in general, even here on CAF, are often full of problematic views. Discernment and further research to validate when reviewing ANY resource is always preferable!

I have not viewed their discussion forums, so that wasn’t what I was talking about. I’m talking about where one is taken when one hits “index.” Among other things, their links repeat the old saw that Archbishop Bugnini was a mason (something the Holy See has categorically denied), that the liturgy has been destroyed, ie, the EF and the OF are so radically different as to almost oppose one another (something the Holy Father has denied in his cover letter to the Bishops on the promulgation of *Summorum Pontificum), *promote the conspiracy theory that Cardinal Ottaviani did not know he signed a detraction of his earlier reservations on the Mass of Paul VI, etc., and links to places like “Traditio” should sound a warning bell in the ears of Catholics. Their agenda is not the Church’s agenda and they apparently not thinking with the mind of the Church (the whole Church, pre-and post-conciliar). For this reason, I advised caution (and still do).

Clearly there are some points of controversy where the articles take a different position than you. I would not characterize this as “not thinking with the mind of the Church.” I encourage the OP to look over the site and decide for himself. The majority of it does not concern controversies and I think he would find some parts very helpful.

Of course, caution is always a good idea whatever one is reading.

They don’t take a different position from me. They take a different position from the Church. The things I listed, for example, are directly at odds with what the Church has factually said (Archbishop Bugnini, Cardinal Ottaviani) and papal intent (Benedict XVI’s letter to the world’s bishops on the release of Summorum Pontificum). Coupled with the fact that they link to radical dissident sites like Traditio makes caution a must (I would avoid recommending it to any, but knowledgeable Catholics for those reasons, for fear that neophytes would be lead innocently astray)…but thank you for noting that in your final sentence.

I agree with JKirkLVNV. Be careful of the Fisheater’s site. It is not for beginners. You will benefit from a certain baseline of knowledge.
