11 For nobody can lay down any other foundation than the one which is there already, namely Jesus Christ.
12 On this foundation, different people may build in gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay or straw
13 but each person’s handiwork will be shown for what it is. The Day which dawns in fire will make it clear and the fire itself will test the quality of each person’s work.

What I am most interested in are the words, “The Day which dawns in fire”

Is this the day we are judged?

What does fire represent here? as in “fire itself will test the quality of each person’s work”

The fire is the fire of judgement.

From the other side of death, we will see what in our life was worthwhile or not. A lot of what we spent our effort on will not be there on the other side of judgement ( worldly achievements, wealth etc.)

The Day is referring to the day of judgement. God’s fire (Heb 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire) will scrutinize our work, and burn away all that is unworthy of heaven. This process is what we believe to be purgatory (from the word purge, to cleanse or purify) The good news is that if God is purging us of our sin, then He is getting us ready for Heaven. He certainly wouldn’t get rid of our imperfections, and then send us to hell!
