An insult to human intelligence is when somebody says something so preposterous no person with any sense should believe it. It’s an insult to human intelligence.

For example: the Mormons say God started out as a human being on another planet, and because he was a good Mormon he was given this planet to rule. I kid you not. That’s what Mormons say. How can anybody believe this nonsense?

The phrase is a common saying. It’s not a religious term.
