No one really “hid” anything, they just didn’t discuss their gay sex lives in polite company.

Most people, especially children, were hardly aware of it- leading to the production of educational films like “Boys Beware” by Sid Davis to teach kids what they need to know about it.
I saw some of those old fear propaganda. And folks did hide I’m sorry to tell you. In some places (still even today) homosexuality was illegal. One could also use the “gay panic” legal defence against murder.

They kept it all discrete, it was a different age for sure.

In 2018, we can look at Miley Cyrus or Madonna and think of what sleazy public personas they must be.

But truth be told, in the previous era, Marilyn Monroe and others were just as sleazy and not really "glamorous as we might see them today. Ms. Monroe posed in the 1st Playboy and allegedly had group sex with the President and Attorney General at the time. The difference was that it was kept discrete and people valued their reputations. The late Liberace was accused of being gay, and actually fought the accusations in a British court and won a judgment. That would not happen today, but did back then.

I’m glad it wouldn’t happen today. You may think it was about keeping it “discrete” but it was more often about hiding it so your career wouldn’t be destroyed and you wouldn’t face the threat of physical violence. Again; it wasn’t that long ago that homosexuality was actively illegal.

The marriage wouldn’t even be valid as its impossible for two men or women to get married.

Legally it’s perfectly possible. It’s also possible in my church.

Legal marriage isnt a sacrament, and dosnt really mean anything, I dont know what Church you go to, but a gay marriage isnt a sacrament.

I agree with this. I came out in 1982, but only to other gay people or close friends. Even back then, I had real concerns that my career might be damaged if my sexual orientation became more publicly know. I also hid the fact that I’m gay from many family members. But it wasn’t because I was being polite, it was because I was afraid of how they’d react.

Grave matter + knowledge + consent = mortal sin

Knowledge does not raise to the level of the ability to write a masters thesis on the topic, but it is not as low as “somebody told me this is a sin”.

Heck, just this week someone told me that asking Mary to pray for me is a sin and someone else told me that failing to vote for their preferred candidate is a sin.

Even if that someone is someone we love and trust, simply being told does not = knowledge.to the level of culpability for sin.

A legal marriage does mean something. For gay people, it means that they gain certain legal rights and protections in terms of inheritance, for tax purposes, for insurance purposes, etc.

It means a lot actually. Not every one in the world is Catholic and plenty of people still marry. The reasons could be for legal matters, personal ones, or even religious ones as various churches do recognise same sex unions.

Yes but people usually explain why its a sin. Everyone has to inform their own conscience and shrugging off a sin because it doesn’t fit into your life plans/desires doesn’t cut it.

Do you consider any non-Catholic marriage a marriage? I mean in the long run it doesn’t matter as legally they’re recognised, but I’m interested.

When did that happen? I looked at your profile. I thought y’all were more strict.

It means nothing interns of the sacrament, its just a bit of paper saying to people love each other

We’ve been well ahead of the curve on this actually. In 1975 the Australian branch had this to say;
“The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Australia calls for a change in the laws … to eliminate discrimination against homosexuals. This statement is made in the light of the Society’s desire to remove discrimination and persecution in the community. The Society also calls on all people to seek more knowledge and understanding of the diversity of human relationships and to affirm the worth of love in all of them.”

Australian Quakers have supported the celebration of same sex and different sex commitment ceremonies since 1994 and recognize them on an equal basis with other committed and loving relationships. In January 2010, Quakers meeting in Australia Yearly Meeting in Adelaide agreed to treat all requests for marriages in accordance with Quaker traditions, regardless of the sexual orientation or gender of the partners.

On the same side, those people presented good, logical reasons that my vote and my prayers were sins, in fact, I used to believe as they do! Something happens, some spark of grace, that moves you from hearing things as an opinion to hearing them as truth. We cannot judge that point for any other human on earth.

Even the Catechism quoted above notes that the process of reaching perfection is “gradual”.
