I use the Shorter Christian Prayer book (and sometimes the Universalis site) for praying the LOTH. I’m wondering if anyone can explain which readings we’re supposed to do for Lent?

One week’s worth of texts is given for Lent in the Proper of Seasons. You can repeat the texts throughout the season. However, my confusion comes from the reading cycle guide in the front of the book, which says that we start week 1 of the regular Four-Week Psalter on the first Sunday of Lent.

So…what do I do?

The psalms for the weekdays in lent are taken from the psalter (weeks IV this week and beginning with week I on the first Sunday). Once you get to the readings you use the week given in the Proper (which coincides with week 1 of Lent in the larger editions).

Since you don’t have other weeks, you continue to move through the Psalter (weeks I - IV, repeat) and use the same readings for each week.

I use Christian Prayer (though I have access to LOTH) and only have 1 week of daytime prayer. So I just repeat! I’m sorry I don’t get all of Psalm 119 (I think that’s the number) and never get Psalm 22 (Friday of Week III).

They had to take something out to make it smaller.

Blessings.

Hope this helps. God Bless…liturgyofthehours.org/todays_prayers_christian_prayer.htm

Start with Week I in the Psalter and recite the Psalms with their antiphons (Sundays have special antiphons for Lent). Do NOT read the readings in the Psalter; they are for Ordinary Time only. After you’re done with all three Psalms/canticles, flip to the Proper of Seasons and complete your prayer there. Simply cycle through the Psalter as the season progresses, and every week, just repeat the propers in the Proper of Seasons.

You would think that the LOTH could be packaged in a more simple to use form.

I really enjoy it, but in the beginning I got very little out of it, as I was consumed with all the flipping back and forth, trying to get it right.

I guess if you’re a priest, it’s second nature.

Well they do say practice makes perfect, right?

When I started I also spent as much time flipping back and forth and managing the ribbons as I did praying. But with the question on this thread, after I posted the OP and saw the responses, I realized that Lent readings are done exactly the same way as the Advent readings I just finished a few weeks ago…:doh2:

So in this case I made it more complicated than it really is.
And the book I have, Shorter Christian Prayer, is actually the more simple to use form.

Well, according to my pastor, Volume II (Lent/Easter), is set up more awkwardly than the other three. But that’s what I get for starting it for Lent 🤷

Yep, tis the season…just offer it up! 🙂
But see, you’re old school-- If you’re using the four-volume set, I can understand why it’s confusing. I don’t think I’m brave enough to tackle that yet. Not to mention, can’t afford the entire set.

I bought mine on eBay for about $125., including shipping, only to have my pastor tell me he had two extra sets at his office that had been donated…and he would have gladly given me one.

If the $125. price tag is prohibitive, two options…check with YOUR pastor, maybe he has some extras as well…or, they are currently available on eBay for around $35 per volume, you could acquire them over a year period to better fit your budget.
