I use the Shorter Christian Prayer book (and sometimes the Universalis site) for praying the LOTH. I’m wondering if anyone can explain which readings we’re supposed to do for Lent?

One week’s worth of texts is given for Lent in the Proper of Seasons. You can repeat the texts throughout the season. However, my confusion comes from the reading cycle guide in the front of the book, which says that we start week 1 of the regular Four-Week Psalter on the first Sunday of Lent.

So…what do I do?

Currently we are in week 4. If you were using the 4 book LOTH you would have switched to volume 2 on Wednesday and Wednesday of week 4.

The 1st Sunday of Lent is this Sunday so it will be from week 1 since week 1 comes after week 4 in the rotation.

Thanks for the reply!

But what about the Lent readings in the Proper of Seasons…?
Do I view those as optional readings?

First off, it has been a long time since I prayed the Shorter Christian Prayer version of the LOTH, I have been using the 4 volume version for a long time, so I can’t remember all the specifics of Shorter Christian Prayer.

In the 4 volume set the Psalms come from the same cycle as the “normal” 4 week cycle. The differences for Lent are in the antiphons, readings, etc. There you would match the Psalms for the week (i.e. week 1-4) with the “Proper of Seasons” for the appropriate day.

If I remember right in the Shorter Christian Prayer version you would so something similar except you only have one week’s worth of Proper of Seasons for Lent so for the readings you would keep cycling through that week for readings, antiphons, etc. but you would get the Psalms from the “normal” 4 week section that corresponds to the same Psalms that people using the 4 volume set would be using.
