If intimacy was intended for procreation, why is sex aloud after either parnter can no longer produce children?

The marital embrace is should represent free, total, faithful fruitful love.

There are three parts or reasons contained within the act:
Unity
Procreation
Remedy for Concupiscense

As long as you are not doing anything to negate the procreation part (or are doing something that would be non-procreative if the couple were fertile), the marital union still has great purpose and meaning.

This question has been answered many times but I will answer it once again.

The reason sexual intimacy is allowed when the ability to reproduce is no longer evident is very simple. It follows natural law. The PRIMARY purpose of the marital act is procreation. The SECONDARY purpose is unity. If the primary purpose is unavailable due to natural means; temporary infertility, menopause, etc., then the secondary purpose may still be (and should be!) fulfilled.

Also, who is to say that “can no longer produce children,” is a permanent state? There are many phases of natural infertility that are not permanent. Is it being suggested that one should NOT engage in the marital act when it most likely will not result in conception?
Natural Family Planning is such a gift during those times. It has helped couples who were believed to be past child-bearing age to still have children. It has also helped those couples who truly were in menopause to understand and accept their new state.

This isn’t a question of what is ‘allowed.’ It is only a question of following natural law.

There are some great messages in the Bible about people who THOUGHT it was impossible for them to have children - the very old, the barren, even a Virgin!

With a God of miracles, we can never say never!

Is there any reason sex shouldn’t be allowed? Is all in life to be reduced to things only being allowed if fullfilling some specific weighty purpose?

The divine is generous in providing a wide range of delights in our lives. If no ill purpose is being served, they are ours to enjoy and be thankful for. To deny this divine purpose would be to throw the gifts back in God’s face.

I am not sure if it is that simple, but very well said. I will have to reflect on this and see if it cuts through a lot and simplifies many questions I have.

To quote C. S. Lewis, “God is a hedonist.” And he *loves *us. And he is generous. Shucks. You’re not complaining, are you?
