After the homily and the offertory - the priest will say something along the lines of “Pray, my brothers and sisters, that our sacrifice may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father” and we respond with “May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of His name, for our good and the good of all of His church”

What “sacrifice” are we talking about here?

Well, everything. First of all the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (the bread and wine which are about to become the Body and Blood). But it also refers to all of the things in our lives that we “offer up” to God. The two are inseperable.

Ah - I see!

Yes, that makes sense - thank you for your quick response! 🙂

First of all, a more accurate translation of that part (which we’ll hear in about four years…) is “… that your sacrifice and mine may be acceptable…”

This distinguishes the sacrifice offered by the hands of the priest (the Eucharist) from the sacrifice offered by the faithful (their very selves) which they unite to the Eucharist so that it will be found acceptable to God.
