Is it wrong to say that when a priest gives absolution for Mortal and Venial Sins on behalf of Jesus Himself inside the Confessional, that the Grace of full Absolution due to the seriousness of the sin committed is only in proportion due to true sorrow (contrition) of the penitent asking for Absolution? When a sin is committed, not only is the living relationship between God and man damaged, but a “debt” is also incurred - something is taken away from God’s glory - which man is incapable of paying back, except in Christ. That debt has to be paid if reconciliation is to be complete, so that man will be able to live not just in friendship but in union with God. The compensation can only be made by Christ, because he is God as well as man. So forgiveness can only be complete if it involves Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross, which is what happens in the sacraments of baptism and confession.
