QUOTING CANON LAW, THISTLE WROTE (Oct. 29, 7:01 p.m.):
Abstinence has a starting age while fasting has a starting and ending age.
Canon Law:
Can. 1252 The law of abstinence binds those who have completed their fourteenth year. The law of fasting binds those who have attained their majority, until the beginning of their sixtieth year. Pastors of souls and parents are to ensure that even those who by reason of their age are not bound by the law of fasting and abstinence, are taught the true meaning of penance.

Thanks for that, thistle, but I’m still a bit confused. The canon law you quote speaks of “… those who by reason of their age are not bound by the law of fasting and abstinence.”
So this seems to say BOTH can have an ending age, but you indicate that the fasting law has an ending age, while abstinence does not – and canon 1252 seems to agree, though it doesn’t say so in the first sentence of the text. Hmmm …
Anyway, the safe thing for me to do is to keep following the rules as if I were in my twenties (I’m 73). Abstinence isn’t really hard at all. The only reason I bring it up is that I tend to forget abstinence when Friday rolls around, and then end up confessing it (as I did a week ago). So, next time I’ll ask the priest.
