My Friend and I have been discussing the following scenario, and are a bit confused on church teaching:

There is this guy named Bob. For many years, Bob is a cafeteria Catholic.

Let’s say Bob meets Suzie. Bob and Suzie have a one night stand. About a week later, Suzie tell Bob that she is not pregnant (assuming the naturual proccess happened on time).

A little more 2 months after their fling, Suzie tells Bob that she has a boyfriend (lets call him John) now and is pregnant. Bob assumes the child probably isn’t his, but charitably tries to talk Suzie out of having the abortion but John and Suzie want to abort. Bob no longer hears from Suzie and doesn’t try to follow up with Suzie. Mainly, Bob is doesn’t know what to do.

Fast forward a bit. Bob now is taking his faith more seriously. Bob starts going regular confession, and in his first confession after 15-20 years, he confesses that on several occassions he did not help those in need, when he felt he should have (this situation was one, of many ocassions where Bob could have helped others)

Would Bob be excommunicated? He did not approve of the action and charitably told Suzie not to go through. But he may not have done enough to stop her.

No Bob would not be excommunicated. He should have also confessed having sex outside the Sacrament of Marriage. What Suzie and John decide to do is their business. Bob did all he could. Considering that 2 months have passed between their fling and Suzie’s unexpected pregnancy, there is a good chance that the child in question is not Bob’s if Suzie had a period within the 2 months. After the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Bob is now in full communion with the Catholic Church and is able to receive the Eucharist. What Bob can do is check up on Suzie, know her situation, and help her, either directly or by praying for her.

Yep, the assumtion in our scenario is that after 15-20 years of no confession, that Bob made an honest, good confession when he came back (which included fornication).

Hi CG, what more did you think Bob was required to do to stop the baby killing?

Now that Bob, is on fire if you will, someone should educate him about the cancer health risks of abortion, so if he speaks with another woman considering abortion, he can use her self interrest of good health to save the baby for adoption.
Some recent studies have shown a link between induced abortion and breast cancer, while other studies have shown that there is no link. According to WPC’s Medical Director and OB/GYN, Dr. James Moran, the current consensus is that the medical community is unsure about whether there is a connection between breast cancer and induced abortion. However, it has been shown that full term pregnancy provides a protective effect against breast cancer.

I don’t recommend contacting suzie since that could cause her lots of problems in her life.

I don’t know what Bob’s dilemma has to do with breast cancer, and why 20 yrs later he would be concerned about a non-event. He does not know what Suzy finally decided to do. He did not help her do anything wrong, other than the original encounter which he has since confessed, so why his he making up a sin that he did not do? what am I missing? and why on earth would he contact the woman years later?
