Greetings, I was baptized Catholic, raised Catholic, but was never confirmed. After years away from the church, I am presently in RCIA. However, I was married outside of the church in a civil ceremony. Can I still go through the rite of confirmation without my marriage being valid with the church? thanks

Hi Stephen. My name is Frank.
When you enrolled in RCIA at your parish you should have mentioned your marriage situation yes? Are you comfortable asking this question to the parish Priest/Pastor? That is the best way for you to get a concise answer to what you’re asking here. God bless.

I am actually setting up a meeting with my parish priest. I also just signed up for this forum… So I just thought of something to ask and that was on my mind. Yes, they are aware of my marriage. I guess it was more of a conversation starter. My first post and question. Thank you for replying Frank.

How is your wife with you being in RCIA to be confirmed? Is she supportive or?? Is she practicing and active in her faith?

My wife was not religious at all. She was never exposed to religion as she grew up in Cuba. She wanted to go to church, I went with her to a reformed Protestant church and after several months I realized I missed the Catholic Church. She is not happy with me, but she accepts my decision. She is very involved with her church.

I’m also in RCIA. I was baptized Catholic as an infant but not raised in the faith. I am looking to be confirmed and to receive first Holy Communion at the Easter Vigil this April.

I’m off to bed… Mass in the morning. Good night and God bless.

In general, the answer would be no the marriage would need to be dealt with first. But this is something to discuss with your pastor as your individual situation may be different.

Your priest can help you convalidate or receive a radical sanation. If your spouse has a previous marriage then it may take longer. I’m surprised the RCIA Director didn’t discuss this with you in your initial interview.
