Question on Latin

So…I don’t usually come across Latin being used all that much at my home parish…although it’s always used every week during the benediction.

This Ash Wed, one of the Masses I went to (I know…I went to 2), had Latin being sung…and I have to admit I loved it…but I also murder the language.

Does anyone know of any good websites where you can learn/hear how it’s pronounced? I hear it every Wed and yet I still haven’t caught on. Unfortunetly I have a lot going on right now helping with different church things and don’t have a ton of time to learn it…but I’d like to learn how to prounounce it correctly.

Ecclesiastical Latin is pronounced much the same as Italian. Once you get the basic rules, you are basically set, because there are not lots of exceptions and tricks to the pronunciation like there are in English.

I don’t know Italian either! I have a passable knowledge of some Spanish in order to be able to read some Latin…but I am guilty of murder when it comes to speaking it.

The way many people butcher the English language…I wouldn’t worry about it. 🙂
 
Editiones Familiæ Sancti Hieronymi sells a course on CD ROM with a workbook as well as other materials using Ecclesiastical Latin. You can find them online.

I have posted several times before to draw attention to this page of (free) “Audiolibri”, including two of the Gospels, read by Fr. Félix Sanchez Vallejo, who was a Vatican Latinist for some 40 years. Excellent, fluent ecclesiastical pronunciation.
 
When one prays in Latin with a horrible pronunciation and the prayer is effective anyway, I think it makes the devil even more angry and insulted than if it were prayed with perfect pronunciation. Thus, I probably make the devil really angry every time I try to pray the Rosary in Latin. 🙂
