Hi I have a question regarding organ doning.

Would it be a wrong thing to want to give your life up for someone else? For example… Say you are lying in a hospital bed dying, but not dead yet and someone else in the room next to you is sick and would live if they had a certain organ…that you have. Does this make sense? And if so would it be wrong to want to give your life up for that person so that they may live?

What exactly does the Catholic Church believe on this certain subject???

Thanks!!

You are free to donate organs like a kidney, bone marrow, etc. You can live with one kidney. You can regenerate bone marrow.

You could not donate an organ that would kill you or require the doctor to kill you to obtain it.

You cannot kill yourself to give an organ to this person.

However, if it were me and I were dying from an illness - I would stop taking medication and go off of all treatment to allow death faster in hopes of saving this person. With my husband’s permission, of course, since I believe he has more of a say than I do on when I am allowed to die…God having the ultimate permission, of course! 😉

Also, it should be noted that some illnesses/conditions disqualify a person from donating organs.
