Laudatur Iesus Christus.
I have a question regarding penance on Fridays: If one sets aside the modifications made by the US bishops, and considers only the universal penance on Fridays, when is the penance displaced by a feast?
Canon 1251 says: Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Is the word “sollemnitates” here used in a technical sense, referring to the ranking of feasts as “solemnities,” “feasts,” and “memorials,” or is it being used more generically?
In other words: is the Friday penance displaced by any “feast” or “solemnity” or is it displaced only by a “solemnity” and left in place on Fridays which are “feasts” or “memorials”?
Thoughts, arguments, and citations to authoritative documents would be welcome.

[Can. 1251 - Abstinentia a carnis comestione vel ab alio cibo iuxta conferentiae Episcoporum praescripta, servetur singulis anni sextis feriis, nisi cum aliquo die inter sollemnitates recensito occurrant; abstinentia vero et ieiunium, feria quarta Cinerum et feria sexta in Passione et Morte Domini Nostri Iesu Christi.]
