Could you please help me find information on not going to psychic? I tried to search on Catechism but I couldn’t come up with information related to using psychic and horoscope, etc …

I need to have this information to discuss with someone who thought it wasn’t a sin to get into this stuff.

Thanks!

It says in the Bible.
Deuteronomy
Chapter 18:10-12

Let there not be found among you anyone who immolates his son or daughter in the fire, nor a fortune-teller, soothsayer, charmer, diviner, or caster of spells, nor one who consults ghosts and spirits or seeks oracles from the dead. Anyone who does such things is an abomination to the LORD, and because of such abominations the LORD, your God, is driving these nations out of your way.
psychic and horoscope fall into the above categories.

here is link to searchable on line Catechism

listing the forms of divination that violate the first commandment, including those OP mentions. It gives the paragraph numbers of the longer cite in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (on-line at the bishops webstite usccb.org).
Seven Forms of Divination (2115-2116)

Certainly God can reveal the future to believers. However, man should not be curious about the future.
All forms of divination (false attempts to know the future) must be rejected:

  1. *]Recourse to demons
    *]Conjuring up the devil
    *]Horoscopes
    *]Astrology
    *]Palm reading
    *]Clairvoyance
    *]Mediums
These conceal a desire for power over history and other human beings.

Thank you, InLight247 and puzzleannie. I’ll print the information out and let the person read.

Let me just play the devil’s advocate here:

It also says in Deuteronomy, just a few chapters back, that “You shall not eat those that lack either fins or scales; they are unclean for you.” Deut 14:10, and elsewhere it says we should not plant a sacred pole of any kind of wood beside the altar of the Lord, nor shall we erect a sacred pillar.

Why do we as Catholics take one passage in Deuteronomy literally, but not the others?

Couldn’t someone be given a gift of psychic ability? We all know of someone, usually a child, who has an extra-sense about her. Why is this sinful?

I suppose that’s because Christ gave the Church the authority to interpret scripture and to teach, and the Catechism says to steer clear of the occult:
2115 God can reveal the future to his prophets or to other saints. Still, a sound Christian attitude consists in putting oneself confidently into the hands of Providence for whatever concerns the future, and giving up all unhealthy curiosity about it. Improvidence, however, can constitute a lack of responsibility.
2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

What does the first commandment say?
It forbids worship of false gods and superstition. It is just that clear. No excuse.

A person goes to psyche to find out about the future, the things unknown, i.e. fortune telling. Knowing the future is strictly God’s business; no one should meddle with it. If under the anointing of the Holy Spirit, someone prophesies from God’s revalation , that is different.

Did the ten commandments say anything about what to eat, what not to eat? No.

Does the new Testament say anything about it? Look at Acts:
Acts 10: 9- 15
About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.” “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.” The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
That settles what to eat and what not to eat. Also, the Gospel and salvation are spread to the Gentiles.

There are people who do have a very strong sense of intuition, in other words, some sort of psychic ability. They don’t try to “develop” it or do anything more with it, but it’s there and they can’t help what they “feel” or “see”. They don’t encourage it. Is that considered different from a person who openly works as a “psychic”?

Fr. Gabriele Amorth on p.39 of his book “An Exorcist Tells His Story” writes,

“Satan has the authority to give certain powers to his faithful. Since the devil is truly a liar, at times those who receive these powers either are not or do not want to be aware of their origin; they are all too happy to receive these free gifts. It may happen that one person is given the gift of clairvoyance. Others, simply by sitting in front of a blank piece of paper with a pen in their hands, are able to write page after page of spontaneous messages. Yet others feel that they can bilocate and that part of them can enter buildings even far away. It is very common for many to hear ‘a voice’ that a times suggests prayers and at other times anything but prayers. I could go on with the list.”

Thanks for that explanation, Henning. Would that also be the same for mothers who have a forboding of something horrible happening to their children? I know that many mothers have this kind of connection or intuition regarding their children.

That could be intervention of a guardian angel. Just like demons can put temptations in our heads, guardian angels can put helpful thoughts in our heads.

The things that you speak of as physic and such, they only MEMIC the true gifts of God. That is all the darkness of this world can do, is memic - and make it seem attractive in a sort of new package - which is still the old package full of lies.

If we are open to the Holy Spirit and his work in Christ Jesus, then the truth that we need to know will be revealed to us in all things.

Not quite sure if you were responding to my question regarding the connection between mothers and their children… I’m not a mother, so I’ve not experienced this connection myself, but many mothers I know, even reading about women in history - from average to very faithful/holy - seem to have this from the time the child is in the mother’s womb to grown adults. I’ve never really thought about it until I came across this thread, but it’s very common to hear about a “mother’s intuition” and how they know when there is something wrong or right going on with their child.

I’m just wondering if this particular mother/child connection, which is essentially intuition and to a much lesser extent a form of psychic ability, is a gift from God or, as Beckymarie mentioned, a gift from God through the guardian angels. If not, does that mean many, if not most, mothers are experiencing evil and should ignore this connection?

I see. Sorry!

Yes, the mother/child connection is an amazing thing isn’t it.

God is go good. I think it comes from Scripture also **Isaiah 49:15 Can a woman forget her nursing child And have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you.

**I think that natural awarness of closeness, then God’s love bonded to the child and mother, is what makes us so that we are aware of their moment or day by day needs.

Thought I’d give a couple examples with my own mom. When my older brother was a toddler, Mom had a feeling of dread and ran to check on him, only to catch him the moment he rolled off the bed.

A similar thing happened later. Mom woke up, woke my dad and said “something’s wrong.” They went to check on my brothers, opened the room and it was filled with smoke. Their bunk beds were up against the wall, and one of my brothers had left a nightlight on with his pillow up against it. The two of them were sound asleep and my youngest brother’s pillow was on fire. Because the door had been closed, the smoke alarm in the hall didn’t go off, and Mom couldn’t smell the smoke from her room.
