I have a question on the being selfish and if so a mortal sin. So i woke up during the night and went to the bathroom. I noticed that our dog needed to go out and go bathroom. Instead of letting him out I went back to bed thinking somebody else will let him out. Anything will help. Thanks.

Hopefully the dog peed and pooped all over your floors and carpets so you got your penance in the form of having to clean up the mess.

That sounds like laziness and irresponsibility to me.

It does not sound like anything approaching mortal sin. Mortal sin requires grave matter. Letting the dog mess in the house is a series matter but serious does not equal grave.

I suggest mentioning this in Confession, and making a resolve not to do it again.

Come to think of it–did someone else let him out?

Or were you cleaning up the poop next morning?

It’s good that you’ve accepted that it was selfish, but in future I think you’ll be more thoughtful regarding your dog.
Throughout life, it will be important to consider others even if it costs us effort and inconvenience.
We need to cultivate that in our families, in our life relationships, and very much so when we are parents.
Being aware that we owe consideration to our pets as well as each other is a positive things,
and obviously you realise that now or you’d not feel guilty…so though you still feel bad, you made progress.

They need their family, their pack, to take care of them

Trishie, a black kelpie!

Now op how would you feel if you couldn’t go to the bathroom when needed. This leads dogs to stress, to pain, to infection, to neurotic behaviour.

Then the poor animal pees inside and gets punished for some human’s laziness. But you recognise this in you and that’s great. You are growing spiritually.

Go hug your dog!

What you did was cruel and unkind but it is not a serious matter.

You mentioned our dog. I’m guessing this is a family pet? If so, how old are you and what is your place in this family unit?

While I would be pleased with a teenager being considerate and letting out a family pet, I would not begrudge them if they chose not to. They are not an adult and have not assumed full responsibility for the animal unless they had already solely taken responsibility for it. At the same time, I would be fairly peeved if my husband or an adult family member left an animal in distress to wake me when they could have taken care of it.

You have to understand, ALL sin has its root in selfishness. That’s what sin is. Fr Schmitz described it best “I know what God wants but this is what I want”
