i’m taking a bible as literature class and i have a jewish professor. we’re going over matthew, and he said one class that the author of matthew, who was knowledgable of the old testament, was able to make up stuff about jesus and connect it to the OT make jesus look like a fulfillment of the OT. he made it seem like matthew twisted the OT to get it to say what he wanted it to say and to make certain passages in the OT apply to jesus that originally had nothing to do with messianic prophesy or anything like that. is this a common objection that jews bring up? is he right in some ways or in anyway?

Is he trying to say that Matthew, one of the Twelve, deliberately made up false stories about Jesus, simply in order to fake His claim to be the Messiah?

In other words, Jesus wasn’t really the Messiah but those left behind faked the evidence to make it seem as though He was, after He died.

They used that phoney teaching to bring in followers and convinced that that Jesus was truly God, truly rose from the dead and then ascended into Heaven.

Following all that they willingly suffered torture and death just to back up their false claims, and managed to convince others to do the same. At the same time knowing that the One God would know what liars and blasphemers they were, they kept up the deception right to the end?

WOW!!! Is your teacher related to Dan Brown by any chance?

Matthew believed every word he wrote. All the NT writers did. They bet their lives on it, not to mention their eternal salvation.

Interesting school. Who teaches the class on racial tolerance- David Duke?

Yes, many (if not most) Jews believe things along this line.

No he is not right.

And, it’s a shame he is interjecting such things into a literature class. An atheist can claim the whole thing is made up, so I really don’t see his point in doing this. If he was teaching Jewish criticism of the NT, then it would be appropriate (although still wrong).

thanks for the insights…

after hearing two more objections that he brought up, i actually think he might be dan’s brown cousin.

he cites matthew 5:17-20, saying that jesus teaches that we’re still under all the same laws, ritual, and obligations of the jews.
he cites matthew 6:5-8, saying jesus teaches against public prayer.

any thoughts/insights?

In Matthew 5, Jesus talks not of abolishing the Law, but fulfilling it. He does exactly that. Moses said that God will send a prophet not unlike him who will lead them into a New Covenant. Jesus fulfills the Old Covenant, thus making Israel no longer bound to the Laws of the Covenant. These Laws are not abolished, they are fulfilled.

Sigh. Enjoy yourself; looks like you have your hands full. Jews then, as today, REJECT the idea of Jesus as messiah based more on their idea that the messiah was coming in worldly power. The Christian notion that someone who gets himself crucified could possibly full messianic prophesies is a great paradox for them.
