Question on this controversial picture

Hi there, brothers and sisters. I have to ask you about this picture. It’s from 100% KATOLIKONG PINOY!, the Philippines’ non-official Catholic Internet ministry. Here it goes

The subcaption says: “We first made it popular”. Actually, it’s a reproduction of the same motivational poster from the Ask A Catholic Priest page.

My question: Is this picture harmful to the faith or to the Catholic conscience? There are catholics who confessed as traditionalists who consider this as blasphemous and degrading to the holy orders… I need some words from you on this matter.

I had to google ‘planking’ first as I didn’t know what it was (sad me).

I have to say, I thought the poster pretty funny. I really don’t see what’s blasphemous about it.
 
It is a gesture of the newly ordained priests totally submitting themselves to Christ. That is what I see.

I don’t know what you are looking for. I was at an ordination and the candidates do prostrate themselves similar to this picture.
 
Love the picture! Several of my friends posted it on thier FB pages. It is similar to some other great vocations promos being used these days.
 
This is controversial?🤷 I just think it’s good, clean fun. For heaven’s sake, it’s humor on the INTERNET that’s actually SUPPORTIVE of catholics!👍
 
The poster mocks Holy Orders! This part of ordination is a solemn moment of laying prostrate in total submission to Jesus Christ. It is one of the most humble expressions of the ordination rite.

If anything, it’s mocking popular culture.

I think it’s cute, clever, and gets people to ask questions about “hey, what ARE they doing?”.

boncrayon obviously meant to use a “?” instead of a “!”
 
It doesn’t seem blasphemous to me. I think religious jokes are fine as long as its respectful.

There are a lot of jokes out there that are very blasphemous. I think sometimes we can overreact to all that and second guess any joke as disrespectful. So we have to always take a deep breath and evaluate each joke objectively.
 
I can see why some people might be upset by it.

But it’s probably quite funny to many young priests and seminarians. It could also attract the kind of person who might never view a Catholic website, if they google for planking images and get this, they could think, “what is this about? what’s going on here?” and read on to find out more. I have a fellow convert whose journey to the Church started with a joke a seminarian posted on an non-religious site. That led my friend to ask him about aspects of being a priest. He then asked the reason the seminarian believed he was asked to do this. Within six months, my friend was a newly confirmed Catholic!

Maybe someone could stumble across the “ask a priest” site or this one through this picture, and it could lead them to the Church. God may want that picture because it will lead someone to Him. God works in mysterious ways!
 
Who is planking now that prompts the poster to say we made it popular?
 
I love it, just like I loved the Men In Black themed vocations poster of a few years back.
 
I don’t think it “works” as humor because the candidates in the photo are not actually planking. But I see nothing that is offensive or harmful to the Faith.

How awesome to be ordained in St. Peter’s Basilica!
 
Thank you for your replies guys! It saddened us though in the notion that scandalizing others somehow can also be counted as fault. The administration of the page is determined to take down the picture if objections against it persist.

We all know that the faith is profound, yet is also basically simple. Our faith is deep like a deep ocean, but to enjoy the ocean is also equivalent to enjoying the friendly waves of the shore, where we can smile and giggle and laugh our hearts out. We find humor in our religion and that proves that our religion is indeed not aloof to human nature, the nature that was endowed to appreciate humor. As Chesterton puts it “It is the test of a good religion whether you can joke about it.”
