It’s a new fad. You lie perfectly straight and stiff on the ground or preferably in some weird location. Then you get someone to take your picture and post it on the internet.
The original version of the ordination picture said “Planking – We made it popular before the meme” I had to look up “meme”. Evidently its a fad that spreads via the internet.

It’s a way to strengthen your core body strength. It’s like going into “pushup position,” but instead of resting on your palms, you rest on your forearms, and you don’t move. You just stay in that position. It looks like a prostration, except that your body isn’t touching the ground. Here’s a picture of someone doing it perfectly (you can close your hands if you want):

So, why is this controversial? I suppose one could argue whether or not it is funny, but what would be offensive about it?

Considering “planking” is popular right now, I would think it’s a good recruitment poster for vocations. Invites people to explore it further.

I suppose you could call that a “plank position,” but “planking” in the sense intended here means doing it in a ridiculous circumstance in order to have it photographed; see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planking_%28fad%29.
As I said before, I find it funny and not offensive at all, but if a person were to find it offensive, it would be because something done for a holy purpose is being likened to a frivolous and profane fad purely because the appearance is similar. Imagine captioning this image like so, and you will see to some degree the kind of problem people might have:

I am a bit put off by planking in general, since it originates with the way that African slaves were transported to the Americas, lying stacked like planks of wood, devoid of humanity.
However, in this particular picture, it’s almost fitting since entering into the priesthood can be compared to voluntarily becoming a slave to the Lord (think “Total Consecration to Mary” where people wear chains around wrists, ankles or their waist to signify their slavery to Mary).

Guess I’m getting old: I had to google “planking” to see what the commotion was about. Even then, I thought it was a little lame.
I liked the Men in Black posters a lot better as catchy, humorous pieces of advertisement for vocations. I never saw the superhero poster (“yes, you get to save the world, no you can’t wear a cape!”)
Nothing particularly wrong with it, though. We Catholics need to lighten up a little bit. If we can’t laugh at ourselves a little, and scream “blasphemy,” “heresy,” or “mortal sin” every time there is something that just has a friendly little twist to it (like this does,) we’re going to look crazy to outsiders. Nobody wants to join a church full of crazy people!

It’s important to remember that these are vocation posters. One of their markets is Catholic schools. Kids need to see priests as regular people who have fun and serve God at the same time. I love to see one of these posters when I visit the local high school. Not that any of these kids will go straight to seminary but it plants some seeds.

I remember years ago a “controversial” billboard that showed Christ crucified (camera view looking down) with the model playing Jesus looking up at the camera. The caption said “Dare to be a Priest Like Me”.
I thought that was pretty cool.

Very funny!!! Reminds me of the pictures Tom Peters puts up on the American Papist website. He frequently shows pics of the Pope and bishops and clerics with absolutely hilarious taglines. All in good fun. Sometimes he posts the picture first and asks for funny captions.
