Question re: baptismal proxy representatives

I am a Deacon in the Catholic Church, and would like a definite answer to the following question:
Is a person that has been identified as a possible proxy for an infant baptism required to be a Catholic as the God Parent for whom he/she is serving as proxy does?

just thrashed this out for recent baptism, proxy has same requirements as godparent, had to ask and that was the answer diocese gave us

“Becomes”, as in the future that you did not have anything to do with? Or do you mean that he was born and baptized Catholic as a baby, but when he grew up, he grew away from the Church and is no longer a Catholic in good standing and could hardly help you raise your child to be a good Catholic?

As in she was Catholic when she was chosen to be my Godmother and then she left the Church and became Protestant. Sad.

It is indeed sad, but I don’t see how it reflects on you–your parents must have seen to it that you are Catholic. The obligation of Catholic Godparents is to be of help to the parents to bring up the child in the Catholic Faith. I don’t see how that’s possible if the person chosen to be a Godparent is no longer Catholic. Hmmm–sounds like someone no longer considered the obligation a religious obligation. Very sad.
