I don’t know where this question belongs, so I hope this is an appropriate forum in which to post it.
Recently, I heard an anecdotal story about Pope St. Sylvester and am wondering if anyone knows anything about it, if it’s true, the story behind it, etc., etc. (any info will be appreciated).
From my internet searches I have learned that there are many fables and unsubstantiated anecdotes (as well as what may well be true stories) surrounding this Pope/Saint.
Here’s the story I heard:
One day, Pope Sylvester was walking in the streets of Rome with an acquaintance (I cannot remember who this person was, although it was stated in the story I heard). They were discussing the Church and enjoying many of the beautiful buildings, paintings and material treasures / assets of the Church. Part of what they were discussing were the predecessors of the Holy Father and the saints of old, including St. Peter.
At one point, the acquaintance/person with Pope Sylvester expressed sorrow and, referring to the grandeur and material ‘treasure’ of the Church, remarked (something like): "Your Holiness, it is very sad that we can no longer say "I do not possess silver and gold…" - to which Pope Sylvester was supposed to have replied something like: "Ah, yes, but neither can we say "… in the name of Jesus the Nazarene, walk!"
Does anyone know if there is any truth to this anecdotal interchange in the life of Pope St. Sylvester??
