Even way back in the 50s and 60s, I NEVER saw a “Church full of veiled heads.” Everyone - with the exception of a couple elderly Italian ladies - wore hats of some sort in our parish. Chapel “veils” (just round, doily-like pieces of lacy material) were generally reserved for quick Church visits and the school Masses the whole student body attended (though our school uniform had matching beanies and berets that we generally wore.)Well, personally, I think it does seem like a bit of a moral dilemma when the crowd you’re around are hostile towards it.That’s the only reason I could think of why asking would be prudent.
In a way I’m very sad I’m coming into the Church during a time when veiling is not the norm. I think it would have been awesome to see a Church full of veiled heads.![]()
