Question regarding first confession

Since October of 2012 I have attended a Catholic Church with my husband (a cradle Catholic). We have spoken to the priest about sanctifying our marriage and I intend to begin the RCIA classes in September. I know that I will be making my first confession sometime in 2014 (God willing). I have read many things on-line about making your first confession for those who were baptised prior to their coming into the Catholic Church, you must confess all your sins (mortal & venial) since your baptism. What if you were never baptised (like me)? I will be baptised in the Catholic Church at the age of 60! Do I still recount all my sins that I can remember since childhood? Thank you for your time.

You MUST Confess all mortal sins. Venials sins can be left unmentioned, although if I were You, I would Confess ALL SINS mortal and venial as the Priest would be a better arbitrator of what is mortal and venial. So please confess ALL mortal sins. Now if You are being baptised, then You don’t need confession as Baptism restores everything. Period. (I know, its an Awesome Sacrament). Btw, I wanted to be the first to say it although I am sure many more will come after me saying it…

It’s like you get a complete clean slate! I went through RCIA about 2 years ago and going to my first confession was nerve recking. I’m sure the first time you need to go you will feel very nervous too but enjoy the clean slate that will lay before you. Enjoy your easter vigil, it will be a night that will stay with you forever. When you go to confession after your baptism you will need to be concerned only about sins you have committed since your baptism. So there will be only those few things that continue to cause problems in your life.

In ones confession after baptism (I presume a normal baptism not a “conditional baptism”) --one would have to confess any mortal sins since baptism (if one had so fallen)

When there are thankfully not mortal sins – one is to confess from ones venial sins since baptism that one is contrite etc for. (one need not confess venial sins but one must have “some sin” since baptism to confess for a valid sacrament — so do not go right over to the Priest 3 seconds after baptism and ask to go to confession!)

Last year at the Easter Vigil, one of the people being baptized was a 9-year-old girl. At the reception after Mass she stopped me to ask when she could go to confession. So sweet! I told her that I didn’t want to encourage her to be naughty, but that she would have to commit a sin before she had anything to confess, and it would probably take more than an hour after baptism!

All I could think was “She gets it! She really gets it!” And I hope that grace will always be with her. I see her at Mass and the smile when she receives communion…she gets it!

Words can not describe how happy I was that at 65 my husband decided to become a Catholic. He was baptised and never looked back. It has been wonderful to be in Church with my husband.

But … In spite of myself, I felt just a tad bit irritated because I knew that God has forgiven him for “ALL” his sins. And that meant that I had to as well. When I start thinking about some slight that took place years ago, I have to remind myself that that is all gone and that I have to forgive. Fortunately in his conversion, I know that he to has forgiven me as well.
