Ok I am 17 years old sometimes recently I have seen some people in my family eat right before daily Mass, but I have not told them they are breaking the Communion fast because I have not known how to do so charitably or if I should at all. I posted this here phorum.phatmass.com/index.php?showtopic=15350
so now it happened again today, and I am wondering, is it seriously sinful for me no to speak up when I see this happening, even though I wasn’t sure exaxtly what to say. ?? I am also going to confession tomarrow and so am unsure if I need to specifically confess this situation. thanks for any suggestions.

I would reccommend taking this to the confessional 100%. It obviously bothers you. And in the confessional, you should be able to get some good advice on how to handle this. On a side note, I have gone to the confessional based not on my actions, but my failure to act also.

there are a lot of us here who feel you pain, and congratulations on recognizing the infraction… now reality time… you probably know that for you to mention or bring to light the failures of some one else is a good way to not get invited to the Christmas Party!
I see nothing wrong with asking your Priest about it, suggest maybe a sermon on basic preparation for reception of the Holy Eucharist… I think the mention in the confessional was a good idea… Be careful pointing to the splinter in someone elses eye, you may find them pointing back at you for something else… God Bless you for your care and concern, and Peace be with you… 👍

Isn’t PhatMass fun? 😃

Definitely mention this to your confessor. You may also want to ask him if you can do something extra for your family, who persist in violating the Eucharist. For example, maybe you can do an extra 3 Hail Marys every day for the intention of your family’s’ food violation. That way, you’ll feel like you’re doing something effective, even if they won’t listen to the Truth.

God bless you! I am so glad a young adult like you is here! 🙂

What is the current rule regarding fasting before Communion. I fellow the old one.

Nothing to eat 3 hrs before. nothing to drink (except water) 1 hour before.

To be honest, I was under the impression that fasting before Communion had been dropped. I only started fasting when I was told of the old rule 11 years ago.

Growing up in the Catholic Church I was never taught anything about fasting. - Yes I did go to a Catholic School. When I look back now I have a hard time calling it Catholic!

The new rule is fasting from food 1 hr before receiving communion. (Not one hour before the start of Mass.)

As far as I know it is vasting 1 hour before Communion.

yeah 1 hour before receiving communion. That makes it pretty safe to eat pretty close up to the begininning of Mass. I am 15 minutes from my parish and Mass is about 45 minutes long before it is time to receive. So i give myself a little insurance buffer but I get to enjoy my cheerios in the morning 🙂

Remember that the rule is no food 1 hour before *Communion, *not Mass. If people enjoy breakfast before morning Mass, it is likely that the time it takes to clean up from the meal, drive to church, and sit through the Liturgy will be over an hour. However, if you’re talking about them hitting the McDonald’s down the street and then going straight to Mass, you have a problem.

The relevant Canon, if anyone’s interested:
Can. 919 §1. A person who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain for at least one hour before holy communion from any food and drink, except for only water and medicine.

thanks for the responses this is a pretty sweet forum! well I will just add it that daily Mass is only half an hour long and we live within five minutes away,

In that case, I would definitely bring it to their attention. Make sure they know it’s official Church teaching, and not just some over-pious tradition. You can find the full text of the Code of Canon Law at the vatican website here:
