Astronomy tells us that it takes millions or even billions of years for light to reach earth from the furtherest stars. So if Heaven is above all this, than could it be that the days we count as six days could have been in reality Billions of years for a day from Gods point of view?

Just Curious.

It is possible. A thousand years can be a day for the Lord. 🙂

Adam lived up to more than nine hundred years according to Genesis. We don’t know however, on what calendar it was based on. Gregorian calendar was unknown that time.

Personally while I would listen to speculation about the creation I would simply believe what the Bible say. If it is six days then it is six days – but now looking at it, the six days may be the Lord’s six days; their time span may be different from ours. Though nothing is impossible with God.

I would see the creation story as a compression of the time span that it happened and it only narrates only the main events that took place, not the details how it was done, considering the whole thing is being told in just a few chapters of the book.

God bless. 🙂

Did you know that laser pulses can travel at 300X light speed.

If we humans have done that, then imagine what God can do…

It is very difficult to use only the information available in the text of Genesis and try to make a sound determination or “scientific” examination of it in a way that makes sense. Realize this is a text written LONG after these events would have taken place. Realize also that the “things” created in the story are things that were major divisions in the Hebrew culture at that time. Earth, water, plants, animals, people, etc. You don’t see cars or football teams in there because they didn’t exist at the time of the writing; only the important divisions at that time are represented.

The writing style is not the same as later, historical texts. That could be because the writer(s) only knew this style and used it, or it could be that they intended it to be broad in scope, meaning each “day” represents major milestones in creation. The difficulty you get into when you try to apply a “gap” theory, where each “day” is said to be a millennium, is that you end up with plants created in one millennium, but no light until the next millennium. To use a gap theory, you have to pull back from any kind of literal application of the events themselves (meaning you have to say plants and light came into being close to the same time) and relegate them to figurative, major milestones.
Created close together, but the “epoch” assigned to each is far apart only to distinguish them as different from each other.

The significance of the whole story is that there seems to be a certain “pecking order” in the creation itself, where lower forms of life are created first, man - the highest form on Earth - created last. Then later in the text man is naming the animals, signifying a higher importance in the pecking order. Then man is given dominion over the creatures and the Earth as a way to prosper and multiply.

It is also difficult to rigidly enforce the idea that ALL of X is created on this day, ALL of Y is created on that day, when you have God with a created Adam creating some things right in front of Adam. This suggests, at least, God demonstrated His creative power in front of Adam so he could know of the things that happened in the “days” before he was created. Not a full “second” creation, but merely a demonstration of the essential pieces of the story that preceded him.

Interesting to note that the apparent “two creation stories in Genesis” problem we still see mentioned today was the same problem that helped create and fortify much of the paganism that prevailed in early Jewish history. It led to ideas such as their being a different, first “Eve,” and other persons or demi-gods created first that somehow didn’t work out, thus God had to “re-create” it a second time. It is these pagan theories that most closely match up to the polytheistic beliefs of the Babylonians and Assyrian gods, and that is why some scholars insist that Abram did not begin with a monotheistic religion. I don’t believe that because there is no good evidence aside from the idea that “everyone else did it so Abram must have done it too.”

“Above” in what sense ?

The text says “six days” - there is no clue that billions of years are meant; so the suggested explanation would mean that all readers until recent times have been tripped up by a shade of meaning they had no way of knowing was present, that is opposed to the ascertainable meaning, rather than being a further shade of meaning that compliments others. If that can be true of one passage, even though there is no clue to it, there is no way to tell that it is not true of others. This would reduce the message of the Bible to utter confusion.

This is a bird that won’t fly, I think.

It’s worth knowing, that christianity doesn’t dependupon a literal 6 day creation. The church does not actually say you should believe that all creation happend in 6 days, and never officially taught this. For a little perspective on reading Genisis, I’d go to biblechristiansociety.com/ and download “Catholics and the Bible” which is more of an apologetics of catholics for catholics tape from the free mp3 downloads.

the Catholic Church as far as i know doesn’t mandate that we either take this literaly or figuratively. it just directs us to see that whatever the reality may be, God is behind creation. whether single cell organisms evolve into man through God’s guidance, or God forming man out of clay, the important thing is that we recognize that God made it all happen

as for me, i’m not a scientist but i’m theorizing that light could actually be travelling faster in deep space where there is no gravitational influence. think about it, if blackholes are so dense that light cannot escape, then gravity has an influence on light. so if light is in interstellar space it could actually be travelling faster

my thought could be entirely wrong but the point is we’re not sure how light behaves in deep space. for all we know the method of measuring distances of galaxies and stars are inaccurate and that they are actually closer than we think
