On Holy Thursday, it is mandated that the Eucharist is not exposed in a monstrance during the transferring. I know that in most Eucharistic processions such as Corpus Christi and such have the Eucharist displayed in a monstrance, but when we process to the place of reposition on Holy Thursday, we do not display it in a monstrance, but rather, the priest has the Blessed Sacrament reserved in a ciborium or pyx and covers it. Why don’t we have it exposed in a monstrance? To exemplify the solemness of the celebration?

I don’t know the technical answer, but probably because exposition is a joy and blessing, and in a sense we are going into the Lord’s agony with him, and are “deprived” of him in a certain way, even though obviously he is with us in the Eucharist that is reserved in the ciborium (i.e. placing in an altar of repose, not in the central tabernacle).
