Question regarding the weeks in Ordinary Time

Morning all,

This may not be the correct forum to post this question, but here goes anyway.

Regarding the weeks of Ordinary Time, so for this year Ordinary Time week one started on Monday, Jan 10th and ended on week nine Tuesday, Mar 8th. It will resume on eleventh week Monday, Jun 13th.

Next year OT starts wk one Tuesday Jan 10th (Monday Feast “Baptism of our Lord”) and ends wk seven Tuesday Feb 21st. Resumes on wk eight Monday May 28.

The question is what happened to Ordinary Time week ten for this year. :confused:

Just for kicks and giggles I’m writing a javascript program that will give the mass reading for the day. I’ve worked out the Sundays(A,B,C), Solemnities, Feasts, and Daily(I,II).

Just right now with the Daily Readings I have to manually change a constant in order to get the proper reading for when Ordinary Time resumes after Pentecost Sunday.

So maybe if I understand what happened to week ten I can figure a way to automatically compensate when OT resumes later in the year.

Looking forward to an explaination.

Sometimes there are 33 weeks in Ordinary Time, sometimes 34, depending on dates.

Ordinary Time must always end with the two Sundays of readings on the proclamation of the Kingdom (the 33rd Sunday and Christ the King). When there are 34 Sundays in Ordinary Time, none are left out. When there are only 33 Sundays in Ordinary Time, as this year, there is one week left out between Ash Wednesday-Pentecost (so the Monday after Pentecost starts one week later than you would think, in this case Week 10 is omitted) in order that they still finish at the right time.

The last week of the liturgical year is always the “34th week in Ordinary Time.” The calendar varies enough that sometimes all 34 weeks are observed, and sometimes only 33 are observed. In years where only 33 weeks are observed, the “extra” week disappears behind the Lenten/Easter seasons. So this year week 10 is the extra week that’s not needed, so that everything else lines up with week 34 being just before Advent.

Another way of saying this is that from week 1 we count forward until Lent. Then, after Easter, we skip to the end of the year with Week 34, and then count backwards to Pentecost. Any extra weeks are just left out.

You shall count the weeks forward from the Sunday after Epiphany, and backward for the first Sunday of Advent as if that would be the 34th, so the last is always 33, the previous 32 and so on.

Be careful because after Pentecost he Sundays are Trinity Sunday, Corpus Christ, Sacred Heart, and the Ordinary time resumes only after that.

like Batfink says. We count backwards from Week 34 to Monday after Pentecost to find that week in OT, and forward from Baptism of the Lord to the Sunday before Lent for those Sundays, so the Sundays are "lost from the middle there, around 8-9-10 or so.
The ordo, or if you have a published guide to LOTH, should tell you what week OT begins the Monday after Pentecost.
 
I’m sure that the answers that puzzleannie and others have offered are true and correct. I think one thing that is being left out is how we arrive at the date for Easter. It has to do with the lunar cycle. As we know, the moon doesn’t follow the calendar. So, this variation also causes the number of weeks to shift from year to year. Your automatic program would have to also include the lunar cycle.

I wonder too if the years that there are 53 Sundays if we "use all those weeks in Ordinary time. Of course every seven years we get an extra Sunday but then those years New Years Day is a Sunday and then the next New Years Eve and of course other Leap Years we could get an extra Sunday IT is confusing

Actually, Ordinary Time resumes immediately after Pentecost. But it’s true that we don’t have another Sunday of Ordinary Time until after those solemnities. The weekdays in between those solemnities are weekdays of the appropriate weeks of Ordinary Time.

Between now and 2027 only 2011, 2012, 2017, and 2023 have 53 Sundays. The rest have 52 Sundays. Not the purest way to do it, but the OP can probably hard-code these years into his javascript or Unix script. What are the odds this program will be used after 2027? 🙂

Good point. If the program proves successful, future programmers may reuse the code rather than start from scratch. The trend in programming these days is reusable code, not start from scratch.
