I am a godmother to five children from 3 families! The priest who baptized my children explained the role of godparents as one that has changed over the years. No longer are godparents the “legal gaurdians” of the child should soemthing happen to the parent.–unless of course this is in their will and the person has agreed. Now, godparents are seen as role models for the Catholic faith for the child. Will you be able to remain in contact with the child? Will you show them their faith? I am confirmation sponsor to one of my godchildren, the otehrs aren’t old enough yet. I think this shows the true role of godparents to the fullest.
Also, the church requires only one godparent. Generally, you have two. For my son, we chose his aunt who is a very devout Catholic, and an uncle who was lukewarm. I must admit that I regret that. I was hoping to pull the uncle back to his faith, instead I have one good godparent for my oldest son.
