Question to Protestants regarding the Bible

To determine which one is the true gospel and which is a different gospel. There are certain rules to follow and you must let the bible speak for itself. by interpreting scripture to scripture, spiritual things to spiritual things, precept to precept, also the word is written as a parable.

Speaking in tongues is the work of the devil. You can find this proof in the bible. I will briefly tell you. Speaking in tongues was a means by which God spoke and the holy spirit moved the prophet to speak. This is one of the means by which God used to speak to prophets. This was entirely the work of God. So now in 95AD, John is on the island of Patmos, and finishes the Book of Revelation and the line which says anyone who adds or takes away from the prophecy of this book. First it is important to realize, “this book” is a reference to “the whole word of God” God uses prophets to speak His word, and anybody claiming they spoke to God by prophecy is a liar because God clearly finished His word in the Book of Revelation. This was 95 Ad. At that time, God finished the prophecies, there were no more miracles. From now on, the only miracle to be performed is the miracle of salvation, which is entirely Gods work.

Now in the bible there are many proofs which speak about the devil having the authority to deceive the very elect, to perform tricks and sorcery, to knock people backwards when the televangelist compels the power of Christ in the person on the stage, this is Satan pushing the person back, not God, Satan has this power. God is no longer working miracles in this manner, the only miracle God does, is the miracle of salvation. Speaking in tongues is strictly the work of the Devil, it is an act of the Devil as the Devil was given authority over all the earth, as well as the saints. This is clearly spoken of in the bible. The Devil comes as an angel of light with his ministers of righteousness, with the ability to deceive the very elect even for the Lords namesake. Those people in charismatic churches are being deceived. They believe they are speaking to God, however they are not, and the Holy spirit is not present in that church.

so that is the first issue, NO, charismatic churches are incredibly evil, and you should pray for those trapped in them. Speaking in tongues is an act of the devil, and is absolutely not from God, it is impossible. the verse in Revelations guarantees us that God is no longer communicating with individual people by prophecy, only through His word the bible.

The issue of predestination is true, it is written about in the bible. No matter what you think it means or doesn’t mean, does not change the fact that it is a fact. Here is the proof:

John 17:24 “Father, I desire that **they also whom You gave Me **may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.”

Romn 9:11 For the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God **according to election **might stand, not of works but of Him who calls.

Eph 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,

Eph 1:5 **having predestined us **to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will

I am not sure what the official church teaching is, however I am not swayed by any authority but the word of God, and the bible teaches us that predestination is real, and that we are elected of God. To conclude with your last example, predestination, implies that all of our sins are paid for. Do you think any sin you do is more mighty than what the blood of the Lamb could wash away. And the blood of Christ washes all of our sins, the ones we committed in the past all the way to the ones we commit in the future. God knows the beginning from the end, and also wiped all those sins away. That is love. And so you see, by comparing scripture to scripture, we can discern what is truth and what is different gospel by letting the bible tell us. As long as the teaching is a sound biblical teaching using only the word of God as a means to teach, and compares scripture to scripture and the teaching is in harmony with the rest of the bible, it doesn’t make sense to disregard it. You can test what ever teaching you are being taught by harmonizing it with the rest of the bible. and comparing scripture to scripture.

God bless
Speaking in Tongues is the work of the devil? Did I hear that correctly? So, when my former Protestant Pastor who I trust as much as anyone on this planet goes oversees and prays for people to be healed and he speaks in tongues and he prays in JESUS’s name AND the person is healed, you are saying that is from the devil?

Your logic is admirable, but flawed because everyone who disagrees with you also says the same thing… compare scripture with scripture, etc. Therefore, with respect, I reject your logic. For example, my former Protestant Pastor who I love dearly would be able to use his skills in Biblical research to show you that you are wrong in your belief. And, he would be able to quite aptly show you that your view on salvation is wrong.

So, again… I admire your belief that you are infallible (you are your own Pope) and that you can figure it out all by yourself… but, there are MILLIONS of people who do not agree with you… who have more education… who have more experience. So, again… who is right?

PS: Can you please answer my question about the Pillar and Truth? What, who is it?

Answer to you:

First realize that Timothy is not the author, God is:

2Peter 1:20-21
20:Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21:For the prophecy came not in the old time by the will of man:but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

In other words, God is speaking, and Timothy is moved to write by the Holy Spirit.
So now we discern that God is the author, and God is speaking to the true believer. to ever true believer, not just the church, but for all His children, God is spiritual, and His word is also spiritual, and the word is from everlasting to everlasting, while this earth and all of her works, memories, and stories will pass away. So this letter has a spiritual meaning seeing as the word was only spoken in parables. It was spoken as a parable to Timothy, and Timothy wrote the parable God spoke, the word God spoke down in the book, which is the bible. Or what would later become known as the bible.

1 Timothy 3:14-16 (New King James Version)

14 These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:
Code:
God was manifested in the flesh,
  Justified in the Spirit,
  Seen by angels,
  Preached among the Gentiles,
  Believed on in the world,
  Received up in glory.
This whole passage is pointing to Jesus Christ, The House of God is Jesus Christ, the church of the “living” God is Christ. all who dwell in Christ, are indeed apart of the eternal spiritual church. That is what this is talking about, the eternal message, the spiritual message because the word is spoken as a parable. A parable is an earthly story with a spiritual meaning. The earthly story will pass away, even after God comes to judge and destroy the earth on the last day, all of the stories, Moses, Noah, David, the characters and stories in the bible, will all pass away. What wont pass away, is the Word, the spiritual meaning is eternal and will continue on even forever.

The Pillar and Truth is Jesus Christ. He deserves all of the glory. Their have been churches even mentioned in the old Testament. Churches are where you congregate to worship our LORD. This is not a new concept, they pass away just like the seven in Revelation. What will never pass away is the word in Christ. The word is Christ and is the bible, and they are both completely associated with each other. that is what is the pillar and foundation of Truth, the Word, which today, we find in our bibles.

Also, though I provided scripture from the bible, it seems you simply have unbelief because apparently the word of God is too incredible for you to accept. There may be no church teaching, however do you not recognize that God is the ultimate authority in heaven and earth. God is the word and we find the word in the bible. So you deny Gods words then? You have absolutely no questions about the material presented? Only rebuke it? that is very sad.

God Bless.

You contradicted yourself in your own response. The scripture you quote clearly says that the Church is the pillar and foundation of Truth. OF COURSE, the head of the Church is Christ. But, Christ instituted a Church here to assist us on the journey through life.

Additionally, the Church helps us to not go wild with doctrines like you have demostrated. I’ve already cited examples of how many different Protestant folks believe in different ways of salvation… ALL believing they are right…

I believe scripture, but I do not believe you are infallible, therefore, I’ve discounted your doctrine. Close to a billion people do not adhere to the man-made doctrine that you have put forward. And, each one of the other Protestant sects thinks your view is wrong… They quote scripture like you do and have logical reasons behind them. Are you infallible? Are they infallible? What authority can determine who is right?

In my SPECIFIC example listed about about my former Protestant Pastor speaking in tongues and seeing with his OWN eyes that in Jesus’s name a person was healed… Are you saying, yes or no that my former Protestant pastor is of the “devil” because he used tongues?

Ill respond the the previous post first. My response is that indeed if you see a man coming with another gospel you should run away, however we need to define this word, because clearly i am pulling bible passages from the ONE book and I am comparing scripture with scripture, and I know that the word is also spoken as a parable. So you see I bring to the table all the tools needed for an accurate understanding. Furthermore, I have simply presented scripture and explained it, I have not interpreted it, or imagined it, or added to it, or taken away from it. Can you at least not see that?

You need to know what the tools are and how to use them before you can judge a teaching. Yes, my teaching is truth I can without a doubt say that, you can test it for yourself against the bible. Everything i have said is in harmony with the rest of the bible. You are not denying me, or what I am presenting, or how I explain it, because my source is the word of God, not my brain, I am given a brain by God, and apparently understanding by God, thank God. and so I am trying to share that.

Always always always test a teaching against the truth of the bible. then you can rebuke it or learn something new.

Now to answer your question, As I have already demonstrated, speaking in tongues is an act that God does, through the Holy spirit moving those who speak it to utter those mysteries of God. It is a form of prophesying. Any other use for speaking in tongues is a misconeption because God used it to speak to prophets.

Now as I already gave the proof, in the book of Revelation, the very last book, the very last chapter, the last three verses, clearly say the time for prophecy has come to an end. and anybody who adds or takes away from the prophecy of this book[the word of God] the complete word of God not just that one book of Revelation, God has been using prophecy sense day one, and it is called His word. So God finished His word with the book of Revelation.

There is no more prophecy. anybody claiming to speak in tongues has two things going on,

one, they are being used by Satan. I am sorry, really, but this is what the bible says is it not? I did not write the verse. Satan comes as an angel of light with his ministers of righteousness and come as if to deceive the very elect. This is already prophesized and spoken of by God in His word.

or two, It is a scam, a fake.

there is no option three

We must recognize that Satan has authority over the earth. God gave him the authority, it is within his power to push people over like the televangelist and to make people speak in tongues and to deceive.

  1. How do you know that you are not the “other” gospel? Millions of people read scripture, have studied the original Greek and disagree with you. Are you SURE that you are correct? Are you infallible? Yes or No.
  2. Peter said in 2 Peter 3:16 that Scriptures are hard to understand. What is your educational background to fully understand the Scripture? Tell me about your formation process? I’ll compare that to my former Pastor and use reason to determine who is right.
  3. You quote a verse in the Book of Revelation that is flawed (not the verse, your conclusion). John is speaking for his book ONLY. Please cite evidence that John meant that verse to be taken for the ENTIRE Bible? A Bible that in some cases was not even written yet… and certainty not compiled. Does the Bible have a table of contents? Who determined what was in the Bible? Who were the agents the Holy Spirit used to put the Bible into the form you and I use now?
  4. I have to get this straight. You are saying that my former Pastor is being used by Satan when he prays for someone to be healed in JESUS’ name? And, that person is healed?
  5. Because of #4, I am even more sure that Sola Scriptura is wrong. That man-made tradition has allowed all sorts of odd concepts.

I was reviewing this thread with my wife and while both of us have converted to Catholicism we’re both highly offended that you would say that our former Pastor is of the devil because he speaks in tongues.

She also said something insightful (or I thought it was)… The Devil is here to rob, steal and cheat… move people to him and away from God… How in the world is my Pastor doing that when he prays for someone in Jesus’s name and they are healed? Tell me… How does this bring anything but glory to God? I would love to hear a direct answer to that question…

Let me phrase it up for you…

Question: When my Pastor prays for someone (often in Tongues) and in the name of JESUS that person is healed, does that bring glory to God or the Devil?

Are you infallible? I know what you will say… Scripture interrupts scripture, blah blah blah. EVERYONE who has a doctrine says that. The people who believe in eternal security say that… the people who believe that you can lose your salvation say that, people who believe you MUST speak in tongues before being saved say that…

So again, WHY ARE YOU RIGHT and the rest of them wrong. The ONLY conclusion is that you see yourself as infallible.
  • Michael

God is the word and we find the word in the bible. So you deny Gods words then? You have absolutely no questions about the material presented? Only rebuke it? that is very sad.
Are you saying that the Word of God is only in written form? If you believe that, please provide direct scriptural references.
  • Michael

This is what I learned. If you want to understand the bible, understand the rules.
It is a sad affair when I can’t even set you at ease in the fact that at least I am aware of how to read the bible. So people always say it to you, well if you know how to do it, and you always hear it, then try it for yourself. God tells us in

Ps 119:99-104 I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Your precepts. I have restrained my feet from every evil way, that I may keep Your word. I have not departed from Your judgments, for You Yourself have taught me. How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way.[a different gospel]

A different Gospel can be the same bible, the same scripture that you and I read, however only I am proving how I am listening to Him. I recognize that the bible is the authority, and I will test whatever is taught by seeing if it fits with the rest of the bible. Is it in harmony.

You can test their teaching by applying what they say about the scripture by comparing it against other scripture. I will let the word of God tell me what the word of God means. I can tell you that if you do a key word search for book in the bible, you will get 175 results. If you look up the word scroll you will get 35 results. This is proof by using scripture, that book in the sense of the term that God uses it, means His word. I will prove it below.

Because
2Peter 1:21:For the prophecy came not in the old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Proof:
Jeremiah 36:2
“Take a **scroll **of a **book **and write on it **all the words that I[God] have spoken **to you[Jeremiah] against Israel, against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah even to this day.

This Verifies 2Peter 1:21:God spoke, and Jeremiah was moved by the Holy Ghost.

The following verse tells us how the actual word was written down. This is another proof so we can believe that every word on the pages in our bible is FROM the mouth of God.
Jeremiah 36:4
Then Jeremiah called Baruch[his assistant most likely] the son of Neriah; and Baruch wrote on a scroll of a book, at the instruction of Jeremiah, all the words of the LORD which He had spoken to him.

Daniel 12:4
“But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”
**Daniel 12:9 **
And he said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.

This is the same book that was opened in Revelations

Revelation 5:2
Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?”
Revelation 5:5
But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.”

It is the same language, thus we can apply it to the book talked about in Revelation

Revelation 22:18-19
For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

book in this sense means the word of God. All of the word of God is given by prophecy, if anybody tries to change that, they are sol. I am not doing that, I am applying spiritual things to spiritual things.

Tell me Michael, how many teachers have you known to show you this type of information. It is all in there, yet what happens is we only look at what our teachers show us. Well I would really like to show you that the bible is actually capable of interpreting itself, and that once you realize this, and start to really study it, then you can “DISCERN” truth as you read it as it will ring true in your heart.
Code:
Rule1:Compare Scripture to Scripture.
Is 28:10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.
Is 28:13 But the word of the Lord was to them, “Precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little there a little,” That they
might go and fall backward, and be broken and snared and caught.
1 Cor 2:13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
Code:
Rule2:The Word is given as parables.
Ps 78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old.
**Matt 13:34 **All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable He did not speak to them,
Matt 13:35 that is might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:
“I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.”
Mark 5:33 And with many such parables He spoke the word to them as they were able to hear it.
Mark 5:34 But without a parable He did not speak to them. And when they were alone, He explained all things to His disciples.
Luke 12:41 Then Peter said to Him, “Lord do you speak this parable only to us, or to all people?”
Luke 12:42 And the Lord said, “Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food
in due season?”

Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way.

There is another important verse I forgot to mention that is:

Genesis 41:32
And the dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

This verse tells us that the doubling of something, anything, a word, a number, a dream, anything, it is God saying that it is established by God, and that He will soon bring it to pass. You can believe that when it says precept to precept, precept to precept, line to line, line to line, spiritual to spiritual, that God is establishing how we are to read His Word.

It is established. There have been many people that have been incorrectly teaching, and you can assume I am one of those, yet to answer your question, I have been moved into understanding. dont ask me why or when or how, I can say that my eyes were opened. This is said in complete humility. yet you have to realize that not everybody is a fake, and indeed there are people who understand. It was a gift because there is no reason why i should see this truth, yet i do. and so here i am.

I’ve decided to try a different approach… One that is a real world example. This web site biblelife.org/calvinism.htm lays out a very good argument against Calvinism… A tradition that you adhere too. They have LOADS of scripture, lots of external references and frankly, a sound argument. I will ask again, why are you right and they are wrong? They used similar methods to determine the truth… they have the same Bible but they completely disagree with you. How could that be? Why are you right and they are wrong? Does the Holy Spirit work this way?

COULD YOU BE WRONG??? Are you infallible?

Could you please answer the following questions:
  1. Does the Bible say anyplace that it and only it (the Bible) is the sole source of all things Christianity?
  2. Does the Bible say that the Word of God is only the Bible (written word)?
  3. Does the Bible have a table of contents that was written in it?
  4. Who developed the Canon that you and I hold in our hand today?
Thanks!

WOW - no insights at all?
This sub-forum Catholic Apologetics: Sacred Scripture is a really bad place to be asking your question. Any answer from a perspective other than that of Catholic Christianity will be a divergence from the point of this specific sub-forum.
wmscott;:
Is the Bible is the only rule of faith?
Yes.
Meaning that it contains all of the material one needs for theology and that this material is sufficiently clear that one does not need apostolic tradition or the Church’s magisterium (teaching authority) to help one understand it.
Yes, and no.

The Bible is clear. However, it is not a set of bullet points. It is a set of guidelines that require intense study so that they can be assimilated into one’s self.

A tradition to consult, can enable one to reduce the time spent in unravelling the meaning of a passage, and how to practice that meaning. At the same time, tradition can also serve as a short cut into believing, and practising that which is not supported by the Biblical texts.

Likewise, a teaching authority can pass on what it considers to be the most appropriate interpretation, but that interpretation need not be one supported by the Biblical texts.
Is the whole of Christian truth is found within the Bible’s pages?
Yes.

For communication, context is crucial. When that context is absent, misrepresented, or distorted, misunderstanding is the usual result. One of the fundamental problems of Christianity, is the scope of that context. Where are the lines drawn, beyond which your context is nothing but mere pretext?

intheBible;:
I will let the word of God tell me what the word of God means. I can tell you that if you do a key word search for book in the bible, you will get 175 results. If you look up the word scroll you will get 35 results. This is proof by using scripture, that book in the sense of the term that God uses it, means His word.
This is letting your translation get in the way of your study of the Bible.
One translation I searched provided 29 verses that contain the word “scroll”. A second translation provides no instances of that word being used.

When your proof relies on specific vocabulary, from a specific translation, you have no proof.

There is far more to Protestant theology than the writings of John Calvin. Jacobus Arminius is the usual counterpoint to Calvin’s teachings, but Martin Luther can serve that function equally well. Then you have Barton Stone (if you consider him Protestant), John Wesley, and a myriad other writers whose material explains where and why TULIP is a failed theology.

It is unfortunate that the Protestant tradition is all over the place… So much for unity.

Jonathon,

Where specifically does the Bible say its the sole rule of faith? Please be very specific. No offense, not interested in your opinion (which violates Sola Scriptura) I am interested ONLY in Scripture references that clearly say that the Bible is ALL (EVERYTHING) that one needs in terms of the Christian Faith.
