So, you are saying a substitute for Christ can be had, and you are saying this title came from someone who was not Christ. So, Christ did not feel the need to have Peter called this, but somehow it cropped up.
When did the title come about?
Firstly, wikipedia is always a good place to get generic information, and you can always follow the sources that are given for more information.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicar_of_Christ

Again, it is a man made title for a God given position. Similarly, the word Incarnation is a man made name given to an event in the Bible (even though the word isn’t found in the Bible, nor is the word “Bible”). As the dictionary excerpt that Joe left states, vicar in this sense is: a person who is authorized to perform the functions of another.

So, at what point do they get scourged, and nailed to a cross? Rise again in three days?
Come to judge the living and the dead?

That would be preforming the functions of Jesus.

If you really think getting scourged, nailed to the cross, and resurrecting are the “functions” of Jesus, then… Try actually reading the wikipedia link given as well as the sources given. The Pope, as well as the bishops, are called to be shepherds as Christ is.

I’m sorry, but that’s just ridiculous, StrawberryJam. We could likewise say that a school teacher may perform the duties of a parent when it comes to proper enforcement of societal rules and norms upon the children in his or her care. In fact, a teacher is entrusted to preform those duties. We never turn this situation around and say “how dare they discipline my child! They didn’t give birth to him!”

A priest need not be crucified and rise again to be with us in persona Christi to affect the sacrament of reconciliation, does he? So why would the Pope need to be similarly crucified in order to preform those function which have been entrusted to him by Christ Himself? (e.g., to lead the Church)

Which is worse: Not acknowledging a God given position of a person or giving to a person a title or acknowlegement that ONLY belongs to God?
**I don’t understand the question.

Who is not being “acknowledged” that God has give a position to?

…and what schmuck takes a title that belongs to God?

I don’t get it.

Can you be specific? **

Earlier posts used the word “substitue” for Christ. And, the following addressed the functions of Christ.

I feel it fair to say, that the primary function of Christ was to be

Born of a virgin
Scourged, and Crucifyed
Rise again in 3 days
Come again to judge the living and the dead

Without these functions, no one would care about being a christian at all. If Christ is God, sharing with us our humanity so we can share his divinity, then all these things are crucial.
Or why bother? Many of the things he taught were previously taught. The biggie is this is God in the flesh, who will die for you and will judge you for eternity.

Then, I am told the Vicar of Christ is preforming the functions of Christ.

Christ’s functions are being limited to what in this title “Vicar of Christ”??

As if Christ needs a Vicar, or one to be victorious for His behalf, when in fact, by your own beliefs it was He himself that conquered death, and no one else.

 You don’t understand what “function” means, nor do you understand what the functions of Jesus Christ were.

And Christ doesn’t “need” anything, so your point is laughable.

It seems as if you have yet to actually research before attempting (and failing) to mock.

As Christ was the chief shepherd and guardian of His flock while on earth, the Pope (as well as the bishops) are called to be shepherds of the flock as well.

I have no problem with the title that would be very proper, shepherds of the flock for instance.

I don’t feel this dialouge is going anywhere when you clearly have made shots at me that are very unfair.

I feel this is the time to ignore any further comments you may have, considering you rely on wiki for information in addressing my questions.

I listed the most clear functions of Christ, if you think I dont understand them and there are more important ones than what I listed, let me know my error.

That’s perfectly fine if you want to ignore me, since you have made illogical assessments of the word “vicar”. And as I advised you, wikipedia is a great way to get generic information on the issue, and then you can go to the articles linked on the page (which includes the Catholic Encyclopedia). People who mock wikipedia don’t actually realize that there are sources listed there in addition to the entry:rolleyes:.

Try reading dzheremi’s response again, as well as the wikipedia article, which clearly paraphrases the Catholic Encyclopedia, which you can go to as well.
