Are there any reliable stats on this?
There are many many studies out there already that prove beyond a reasonable doubt that condoms significantly reduce the spread of HIV. You don’t have to look to hard to see that there are unwanted children in the world, presumably there parents didn’t use a condom. Obviously there are abortions going on, and obviously if those people used birth control they wouldn’t be getting abortions. So when the Pope says don’t use condoms many people that might now don’t, more AIDS, unwanted children, abortion.

All of this does not negate the fact that people should be responsible before having sex.
  1. If you’re not married, no sex.
  2. If you are married, and an unexpected pregnancy occurs, try adoption–the baby doesn’t have to be killed. Yes, there are many young children out there waiting to be adopted, and should be, but that is an issue for another time.
  3. If people did practice abstinance, all STD’s including HIV would decline, and at a much larger rate than using a condom. Unwanted pregnancies would decline, and the number of abortions would decline at a high rate also.
Bottom line, if people would keep it in their pants until they are married, none of this would be an issue. But nooooooo , people are more interested in the pleasure of the flesh.

Well, actually the reason is because it defeats the purpose of Holy Matrimony. See, the purpose of marriage is to bring forth children into the world. Contraception obviously stops that from happening. What you are left with is people selfishly having intercourse only for the physical pleasure of it, and not the procreative part of it. It’s also prideful, is sends the message that you, not God, know what’s best for you.
After we are beyond the age of being able to produce children, should we REALLY still be engaging in sex with our mates? If sex is only to produce children, isn’t it a sin to have sex after the age of infertility? For that matter, if couples are infertile, should they be engaging in sex? Aren’t they just doing it for pleasure?

So there are abundant studies that show that faithful Catholics who obey the the Church’s rule on birth control are having abortions and contracting HIV?

This article is about a the head of a Harvard-based AIDS prevention centre who has noted that where condoms are often used, people engage in riskier sexual behaviour. Condoms may stop the HIV in the lab, but put them in the real world, and it just doesn’t work.

Please tell me you understand the difference between natural process (God’s will) and human intervention in that process!

As to age and menopause, I seem to recall a story in the bible about a certain Abraham’s wife getting pregnant surprisingly. God does as He wills, and our trying to interupt that is inherently sinful.

Excuse me, but after menopause, woman cannot conceive. They don’t have any more eggs!!

Also, there are who who have had hysterectomies, who cannot concieve no matter what. This is called common sense.

I wouldn’t call it common sense, I would call it logical hopscotch to make something fit a preselected viewpoint.

Regardless of the process of menopause, women have been recorded to turn up pregnant as old as 55, and (if the old testament is to be believed) as old as 90. Even menopause itself is God’s will rather than man’s. So again, I ask you, do you understand the difference between a natural process and man trying to intervene on natural processes?

yes I do. Do you understand that if a woman had a hysterectomy for medical purposes, that she would not be able to have a baby?

I’m curious to know why Catholics believe that contraception is wrong? Where does this line of thinking come from? It seems to me that It’s counter productive to the stance the Church has on abortion. I have always looked at the Catholic church as not wanting people to use birth control or get abortions so that more followers will be born into the church since effectively that’s what happens when you don’t use birth control or get abortions.

It separates two things that should not be separate:

  • sexual activity
  • the end to which it leads - IOW, procreation of offspring
Besides, using IUDs & pills so as to have the one while stopping the other, sounds like a good way of messing up the body.

Since human procreation is a reflection of God’s creative power - & is a mode of it, indeed - it is rather odd to try to make it fruitless.

A further point. Nothing we have is our own: not even our bodies belong to us; St. Paul says they don’t. We have no right to mess with them: not even in matters of sex. We cannot, so to speak, “privatise” them; just as we cannot “privatise” any other aspect of “our” (!) lives.

I’m a former Protestant
It seems you still hold Protestant ideas, so perhaps you shouldn’t call yourself a “former” Protestant just yet.

Calling the Church’s teaching “bunkum” is not very Catholic in word or deed.

Sexual intercourse between those who are infertile due to age or disease of the reproductive organs maintain the objectively procreative element of intercourse.

In other words, the intercourse *itself *is procreative by the fact that it is unaltered in any way, it reaches its natural end. The fact that it is *subjectively *infertile due to the condition of the reproductive organs does not negate the procreative element of intercourse.

Therefore, the meaning of the marital embrace is intact and as God created it-- it is both procreative and unitive.

Again, natural medical issues fall under the purview of the control of God’s will. I don’t know why I bother continually restating that there is a difference between a natural event and human manipulation to contradict the will of God, but hopefully this can be the last time I have to say it.

an interesting point of view on the subject. I don’t think it’s very realistic , but in a perfect world teaching abstinence would be the way to go. It would do the world a major favor if the Catholic church endorsed contraception though. Less abortion, less AIDS, less unwanted children.
In reality this is been prove wrong as the availability of contraception has risen so has the levels of Abortion and STD’s including Aids. They give people a false since to protection. and say that it OK to behave in a immoral way.

Also the rise in use of oral contraception has lead to a increase in other health issues for women as well. You want to Stop STD’s and unwanted pregnancies keep your pants on and the zipper shut. There is only one case In history were a pregnancies occurred following this advise. And it don;t really count as it was not unwanted.

No, Look to the story of Abraham and Sarah, You never now what God may decide to do and when. The Point is leaving yourself open to the Possibility.

No one has shown the requested studies that show that those following Catholic teaching on sex/birth control have more abortions and HIV infections than the rest of the population.

I think we can call this case, closed. 👍

You all are evading my question. If a woman has a hysterectomy for medical purposes such as cancer, she cannot have children as she has no uterus. Should she still have sex?

So what? The woman can’t bear children after a hysterectomy. Should she still have sex?

Well First off let me say I support the Church’s positions on Contraception and Abortion. I support them 100%

Here is why… God said to be fruitful and Multiply. Now of course you want to be wise and that is were NFP comes in.

When yous ay your a catholic or a christian… And you use Contraception, your a liar and donot trust in God and Everyday you go to church and sing or take COmmunion your are damning yourself…Because you are saying you beleive and trust in God but then you use Contraceptives and by doing so you claim to know better then God. Me and my fiance both agrre if God wants to bless us with 11 Kids he will provide the means to do so. IF he only gives 1 then he will provide for that 1. When you use contraception you are Denying God’s provision and your Replacing your will for his and following your own heart instead of God’s and that is Idolatry… and a lot of those Contraception cause Chemical Abortions…So those are just as bad as Abortion.

Sorry if that sounds so harsh but That is how i see the church says. Contraception and Abortions Damning…either dont do it and begin trusting in God fully like he asks us to or use them and continue to damn yourself…
