Can you tell me, what kind of Mass is it called when they sing the Gospel reading instead of reading it?

I was just listening to the fathers of Mercy, on their website, the homilies page and they did there on one of the homilies i was listening to

if you have never heard of the fathers of mercy you should have them come to your church for a parish mission, and i would highly recommend if you do invite them, you should request Father David Wilton, He is amazing

thanks

I would call it the Mass!

I suppose it could be a ‘Pontifical’ Mass (although I think that relates more to the Extraordinary Form rather than the ‘Novus Ordo’ form).

Which form of Mass is not specified in the OP, but if the question is in regard to the EF, it could be:

(a) Missal Solemnis (Solemn Mass) where the Gospel is sung by the deacon (a Pontifical High Mass is simply a Solemn Mass with a bishop as celebrant) or
(b) Missa Cantata (Sung Mass) where there is no deacon and the gospel is sung by the celebrating priest.

At our abbey, in the OF Mass, the Gospel is chanted at the conventual Mass every day. The other readings as well for that matter. In fact also, all readings of the Divine Office. In this case, in the vernacular.

In Latin or the vernacular?
thanks for the responses,it was neither in latin the gospel reading was done in english, and they have never done it at my home parish,i just thought it was beautiful, and its called the mass, but is it called a differnt kind of mass

The Gospel can be sun in both forms, the OF and the EF. In the OF it can be sun in any language. There is no real answer as to what kind of mass it is. It’s the mass, with a sung Gospel. It’s a very ancient custom that goes back to monasticism. It’s over 1,000 years old. At one time it was done by everyone except the mendicants. Though I believe that the Dominicans were the exception to that rule. They may have been the only mendicants who sang it. I’d have to ask that of a Dominican.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂
