Even if we do not know the exact spot of the scourging or crucifixion we can meditate on the Passion of our Lord. We do know that He suffered with much love for us, and that it was painful to the extreme.

It’s said that when St. Helena visited the Holy Land in the 4th c, the Christian community in Jerusalem took her along the route that Jesus had taken; they had preserved the locations of the Way of the Cross amongst themselves, and after Christianity ceased to be an underground religion, they were later marked.

Today, the first seven stations of the Via Dolorosa are in the Muslim Quarter. The last five are located in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The current church only dates back to the 12th c; it had been destroyed and rebuilt several times previously.
