Questionable churches in my area

Qui,

Well yeah but–it’s uncomfortable for sure! I’ve gotta face up to what’s really going on in my mind. Maybe I don’t have enough faith to go anywhere (that’s the scariest though probably!). Maybe I’m too scared of losing my husband or driving him deeper into the drink.

Maybe …something…something…something… 😦

I gotta tell ya. Before I first went to “Catholic Inquiry Class” about 30-some years ago (they didn’t have RCIA yet) I saw the ad in the paper for it. I dithered until the last minute, and literally, at the last minute, I asked the neighbor to babysit the kids (my ex-husband was away at school), and drove there and then went every week, with the result being of course confirmation and entry into the Church. At the time I thought: “The Catholic Church has been around since the beginning. It must be the right one.” Ex-husband never had any interest in religion. So I went by myself. I guess now I am scared that my husband, who definitely does have any interest in religion, will react adversely with who knows what results.

I think I’m getting closer to what’s really happening. I’ve been thinking about it since I read your post earlier and I’m going to continue to think about it. I do want to go to Mass. I’m scared, God help me. 😊

hmmm my parish is also starting a Just Faith program. I went to the info session and it seemed pretty legitimate, with a great speaker. It is a social justice program, and social justice is certainly part of the social teaching of the Church. I am also a believer in the full Magisterium. What were the ‘bad’ connections with Just Faith you mentioned?

As to your question, I would say test the churches in your area that have Masses that are obviously done with reverence and respect for our Lord.

The Church teaches social justice, but social justice is an end, and should not (as it so easily can) be confused with a specific set of policy means (cf. GS76). JF has been criticized (e.g. this) for myopically identifying “social justice” with left wing policies (which of course purport to promote social justice). I don’t know enough about it to say it’s a bad outfit, and it’s probably worth attending a few sessions, but it should certainly be scrutinized closely and treated with appropriate skepticism.
