We also objected to a lot of the content on the Disney channel, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. When we moved recently I took the opportunity to downgrade our cable package to “Limited Basic” (rather than “Basic”) so now we only get the local channels and PBS is just about our kids’ only option. My kids like to watch cooking and painting shows sometimes so I’m hoping I can train them out of wanting to watch the teen drama **** that their peers will be interested in all too soon. What I need is a programmable V-Chip that blocks certain channels at certain times. I like to watch “West Wing” reruns on Bravo but man, watch out for the rest of the programming! Yikes! Some day our TV may conveniently “break” if TV becomes too much of a problem.

Do you think it’s reasonable if I tell my children they can no longer watch such a show?.
I don’t think it’s unreasonable, but I do think that you may only suceed in making said program all the more attractive to your children, and something they would choose to watch at friends, or when you are not there.

Be confident in your parenting and talk to them about what they see (as you seem to be doing) trust them to know what is right and what is wrong.

You sound like a great mom, so chill out and walk with God!

God Bless! 🙂

The plot of the show is this pre teen girl’s mother leaves for Hawaii on a vacation with her boyfriend. I told my children that’s abnormal and wrong behavior for a parent, and Disney is trying to normalize bad behavior.
Not that I’m a Disney fan, but I think your accusation that Disney is involved in some dark plot to “normalize” immoral behavior is off the mark. The behavior described has sadly already been normalized by the modern culture, and the show is only reflecting reality.

Having said that, of course you have the right (and duty) to limit immoral cultural influences that could have a detrimental effect on your child’s developing morality!

As parents we should be very active politically, calling for al a carte pricing of cable. That way we could buy only the stations that provide good programming.
I would be so willing to buy cable this way. In fact, my husband and I have had a number of discussions on this very topic. He’s not ready to cut the cable cord, but there are only about a dozen channels that we watch. I’d be willing to pay $1/month or so per channel that we actually want so we could get rid of the other junk on TV.

By the time we have kids old enough to realize that we have a TV, I’ll probably have convinced my husband to ditch the cable. I hope.

Disney does not care about your children! Disney cares about making money.

I read a book recently called “How Not To Be Your Childs ATM” by Nathan Dungan. He points out how Disney, Viacom, et al use very sleezy marketing aimed at children. Their whole goals are to convince your children to buy their products. They aim to make your children financially irresponsible.

Catholics need to be very active and united concerning this issue. We need to reject the Disney culture. I have brought this up to other people I know. I am always amazed at how people initially think I am crazy. “How could your deprive your kids of Disney”! I think this response speaks for itself. This is what we have become in the consumer culture. We can’t live without Disney!
Right on. Imagine how this country could have been united after 9/11 if Disney would have shown The Straight Story on ABC . Instead, they do the very opposite and, in effect, hold this beautiful film hostage (having purchased the rights to it at Cannes when it was shown there in…'99, I believe).

Now, what is the reason for them not showing it? The answer is obvious to me. It is because the movie carries with it a certain mysterious ‘presence’. Another name usually used to describe this presence is ‘wierd’ or ‘unusual’ ( the very word used to describe it in the Ignatius Press Catalog).

In other words, what Disney promotes, and has nearly perfected the art of, is a certain sameness, or normalness. And like was said above, the reason for this, from their limited perspective, is increased profits.

All of this is to say that Disney has been very successful at killing the love of mystery within us.

It is the director of The Straight Story who is the channel by which God has ressurected this love of mystery.
