I’m 16 and recently my mom has started questioning me about Catholic moral teaching. She is insisting that contraceptives are necessary to prevent thousands of unwanted pregnancies, especially because the Church also holds that abortion is evil. How can I explain the morality of believing that both abortion and contraceptives are evil, and account for unplanned pregnancies and so called “unwanted” children?

Is your mother questioning you because she wants to learn about the faith, or just to argue about it? If it’s the latter you’re probably best trying to avoid these arguments.

The Church’s view of morality is non-consequentialist, meaning that certain actions are in and of themselves wrong, regardless of the good consequences that they might have. An obvious example would be murdering an innocent person, even most secular people would agree that that would be wrong even if a great good would come from it.

The Church considers contraception to be such an intrinsically evil act because it contradicts the very nature and purpose of the sexual act.

I might suggest to tell her you realize she has serious concerns and perhaps she should talk to a priest. Just a thought

Tell her you aren’t sexually active and are waiting for marriage like you should as a CATHOLIC.

I asked my priest during confession about contraceptives and he told me to read that.
