Questioning My Religion Lately

Mary – the earlier posting about going straight to God, to Jesus and the Holy Spirit for guidance is absolutely the best answer. The mysteries of Faith are complex and sometimes beyond our ability to rationalize in our every day thinking. However, the Holy Spirit will bring you grace and let you know the answers you seek. Asking the questions and seeking information is a good thing – but once you have the answers, then you should reflect and pray to the Holy Spirit to bring you to understanding. I struggle sometimes about various teachings. I too am a convert – although I converted more than 30 years ago. I was raised a Presbyterian and those old ideas die hard – I remember as a young child telling my Sunday school teacher that God, the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit were actually all one being – and she almost fainted right there. 🙂 It wasn’t quite how she was teaching the class. It must have been a divine foreshadowing for my future. I have endured three deaths in my immediate family during the past six years. That kind of pain will cause a person to reflect on what really matters – and while I may not completely understand the Faith sometimes, I always trust it. I will pray for your understanding. God bless.

Explore, question, and seek the answers from clergy and your own conscience. The answer will come to you.

Lord, would you just draw my dear young sister close to You…Minister deeply to her as she hides Your word in her heart to keep her from sin…Let her be more sensitive to the HolY Spirit’s direction… Give her the peace that passes understanding as she draws closer to You…Guard her from the snares of the enemy in these last days…Bless her and watch over her spiritually emotionally and physically…I ask in the mighty name of Jesus…Amen

There are many Catholic believers that go right to the Lord in prayer…From what I read any kind of Marian prayer/devotion is optional…I don’t see an problem with father as there are spiritual fathers out there but the holy father thing I just see in scripture and Jesus addressing His Father in His prayer… Our Abba… As for sin, sin is sin and all are displeasing…But in reference to not forsaking assembly…I don’t see that as being a sin for missing services…I don’t see anything like that in the scriptures…More like we need to be connected to a body for our growth and safety…

Anyway, pray pray pray…Pour out your heart before Him. Get into the word and hide it in your heart…Any type of fellowship/prayer group on the base you could plug into for encouragement…Works much better than an internet forum…Anyway work on this to get peace and get settled where He leads you so you stay close to the Lord Jesus in these last days…Peace to you and thanks for your Hubbies service to our country …In Christ…Kim

Hiyas:)

I think, some get the “to” meaning mixed-up.

Holy Mary and the Saints are with God.
We are here.

If I was to ask you to pray with / for me. I send a message ‘to’ you. 'Cause you live there / can be reached there.

I’m not praying "to’ you.

I’m asking you to join with ] me in intercessory prayer.

If you are say, a Judge…would I not say "Your Honor, will you pray with me?

If you are a General…would I not say, “Sir or Ma’am ], will you pray with me?”

I am honoring your position… deserving of respect ]

Not equating you to God Our Father.

I hope this helps
Thanks, this did help quite a bit.

Thanks for the prayer. Not really any Catholic groups. There is a weekly non-denominational bible study I am thinking about trying though. Non-denomination should mean every Christian- hopefully.

Yes it should…We have some Catholic believers that come to our church for the fellowship, ministry(we have time where all can come to the altar for prayer and ministry and teaching…Our pastor doesn’t say a word about other church’s…It’s about getting close to Jesus and maturing in the faith , letting His word change you from the inside out…Let us know how God is working this out for you…God bless ya real good…kim

Well lets look at the prayer:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for our sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

I hope the bolding helps you, this is exactly what you’re doing in this prayer. You’re asking Mary to pray, unceasingly for “our sinners”, your self in particular, “now and at the hour of our death”.

All prayers for intercession is a prayer in just this light, you are praying to them to pray for you. Your prayers don’t even go directly TO them, they can’t. They all, go through Jesus the God Head, to that saint. When the saint receives the prayer, they then respond by praying for you, these prayers go back to Jesus.

I am posting this here instead of Catholic living because I think I am looking for advise from Christians in general- not just Catholics. I am a Catholic convert- I converted in 2007. Here lately, I have been having some doubts about my religion and I am not quite sure how to reconcile them.

The issues that I have are with the Hail Mary. I am hesitant to put that out there because I love Mary very, very much and I believe in her intercession. But the prayer seems like I am praying TO her as well as asking her to pray for me. I know the scripture that the prayer comes from, but it still feels like a form of worship to me. I don’t pray the whole thing- but will say “Holy Mary mother of God pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.”

I also have issues with calling priests Father and the pope Holy Father. Jesus instructed the apostles that they had only one spiritual father- the heavenly father. Why doesn’t this stand for all believers?

Reconcilliation is also kind of an issue for me. I say kind of an issue because I don’t mind going personally. What I don’t understand is why we need a conduit between us and God. Why can’t we pray directly to God ourselves- why do we need to have a priest absolve us?

I believe in the concept of mortal sin- but I don’t believe that a loving, just God would damn a person to hell because they missed a Sunday Mass. I am just not buying that. Didn’t Jesus fullfill the OT laws with his final sacrifice?

There are some things that I am still secure in- that the Catholic church is the church started by Jesus.
I believe in the communion of saints (just not praying TO saints to ask for anything other than intercession- like Mother Mary pray for me and my daughter.) Not asking for anything that would imply that Mary or the saints are divine.
I believe in the Eucharist.

I don’t know- I am not ready to leave the church or anything like that. But I really have no one to talk to about these things because it would devastate my husband and confuse my teen. Also- we are military and don’t have a regular priest since ours is deployed. It is a small congregation and we have only been going a few months. I don’t feel comfortable talking to the deacon about these things.

I am kind of at a loss and any prayers would be appreciated.
Devotion to the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary

This Message was confided by Our Lord to Berthe Petit, a humble Franciscan Tertiary, born on January 23, 1870, at Enghien, Belgium:

“Teach souls to love the Heart of My Mother pierced by the very sorrows which pierced Mine.” (December 25, 1909)

At the Holy Hour (March 25, 1912) the Blessed Virgin spoke thus: “I have called myself the Immaculate Conception. To you I call myself Mother of the Sorrowful Heart. This title willed by my Son is dear to me above all others. According as it is spread everywhere, there will be granted graces of mercy, spiritual renewal and salvation.”

Bible is full of prayers through intercession.
Saint Paul asked people to pray for him.
Many people asked St Peter to pray for them and even centurion prayed to Jesus for his helper to be cured.
People not recognizing prayer through intercession are on a wrong path.

monachos.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6114
Many people ask the wrong questions while searching for a denomination when the right question is, do they have Holy Communion for eternal life like Early Church had in first 1500 years?
Do they have confession for forgiveness of sins?
There is a document claiming protestant Churches were result of human groups.
If you have decided to leave Catholic Church there are 30 000 protestant Churches. Arsenie Boca a man that spoke with Jesus named the Churches without 7 mysteries and cross as Churches of Satan set up to deceive people . And there is Orthodox Church where angels and people celebrate. Looks like prophecy said that Russian orthodox Church will be one to stand until last days. monachos.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6114

So if you want to go to a protestant Church from which Vatican II inspired, I think you’re better staying in Catholicism and finding a Parish not doing New Order MAss like you may find an Eastern Rite Church. Or you can come to Russian Orthodox Church that will last until the end of time

I believe in intercession…Paul wrote in his letters for prayer…They were read to other believers any they did pray for him…He don’t need prayer now as His spirit is present with the Lord…I have a whole list of prayer requests from believers right beside my computer…I have a prayer request in now for God to send a buyer for my mobile home so we can get out of debt…

Well Hiskid, you just said anti Apostolical human teaching.
Why? Because the Holy Liturgy of Apostle and Evangelist Mark ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf07.xii.iii.html has prayer for the departed.

So you said Apostle and Evangelist Mark is wrong for including prayers for the departed and Early Church for first 1500 years is wrong also, which I don’t think so, so this is one reason you need consider Orthodox Christianity.

Hiskid this is not pointed to you as a person but actually to Protestant teachings. You must realize that today’s so called debates did not exist in first 1500 years of Church because Protestants possible made up by Occult Groups did not exists, and people did consider valid historical documents now named tradition to discern the truth. Before 1500 people did not read the Bible and sayd I found a new idea I want to start debating but rather, let’s look at what Apostles and Church fathers had to say .

Don’t mean to be rude, but where does this theology(for lack of a better word) come from…I’ve never heard or read anything in the scriptures like this…Thanks…K
The Communion of saints, lets start with why it’s a good idea to pray to saints
16 Confess therefore your sins one to another: and pray one for another, that you may be saved. For the continual prayer of a just man availeth much.
Now Lets look at some examples

Job 42:
My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends, because you have not spoken the thing that is right before my, as my servant Job hath. 8 Take unto you therefore seven oxen, and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer for yourselves a holocaust: and my servant Job shall pray for you: his face I will accept, that folly be not imputed to you: for you have not spoken right things before me, as my servant Job hath. 9 So Eliphaz the Themanite, and Baldad the Suhite, and Sophar the Naamathite went, and did as the Lord had spoken to them, and the Lord accepted the face of Job. 10 The Lord also was turned at the penance of Job, when he prayed for his friends. And the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.
What’s going on here, is Job’s friends have well and truely offended the Lord, their prayers simply put were not going to be answered. So the Lord instructs them to have Job pray for them, which they do. Then the Lord answers Jobs prayers.

On more example
And Amalec came, and fought against Israel in Raphidim. 9 And Moses said to Josue: Choose out men: and go out and fight against Amalec: tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill having the rod of God in my hand. 10 Josue did as Moses had spoken, and he fought against Amalec; but Moses, and Aaron, and Hur went up upon the top of the hill.
11 And when Moses lifted up his hands, Israel overcame: but if he let them down a little, Amalec overcame. 12 And Moses’ hands were heavy: so they took a stone, and put under him, and he sat on it: and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands on both sides. And it came to pass that his hands were not weary until sunset.
I highlighted two bits here. First of all notice that it was as long as Moses had his hands up, as long as he was praying that the Iraelites were doing better in battle. I don’t know about you, but I have to beleive that every Israelite on the field was also praying. Our Lord, God the Father was only listening to Moses, why? I have to think it was because in the field, the Israelite army was made up of individuals who were not very just. These were among those who kept falling back and worshiping false idol despite seeing first hand the greatness of God simply because they were uncomfortable.

Now the great analogy here of the Communion of Saints, is Aaron and Hur holding up the hands of Moses. This is, in a sense what the Communion is doing for you, when you ask them to pray for you. They are helping you hold your hands up to God, in prayer for whatever it is you need.

Now lastly, regarding us being the Body of Christ, and Jesus being the head.
Colossians 1
Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up those things that are wanting of the sufferings of Christ, in my flesh, for his body, which is the church:
Colossians 1
18** And he is the head of the body**, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he may hold the primacy:
Ephesians 5
Because the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. He is the saviour of his body.
Ephesians 4
11 And he gave some apostles, and some prophets, and other some evangelists, and other some pastors and doctors, 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Until we all meet into the unity of faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the age of the fulness of Christ;
First Corinthians 12
11 But all these things one and the same Spirit worketh, dividing to every one according as he will. 12** For as the body is one, and hath many members; and all the members of the body, whereas they are many, yet are one body, so also is Christ**. 13 For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether bond or free; and in one Spirit we have all been made to drink. 14 For the body also is not one member, but many. 15 If the foot should say, because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
Edit
BTW, I’m not so sure your question is off topic. Indeed this is critical to understanding exactly why one should (all of us should) pray to those who are in heaven (who are the saints, for a saint is nothing more than someone in heaven). Also it explains the how it works.

THE THIRD ROME IN HISTORY AND IN PROPHECY

Can it really be that no one today is even slightly familiar with the “Povest’ o belom klobuke” (“The Tale Of The White Cowl”) – that very same Cowl which was placed upon the head of Patriarch St. Tikhon, nearly a century ago?

The “Povest’” (which is an integral part of Russian Church history) clearly states that St. Constantine was baptized by Pope St. Sylvester shortly after the miraculous victory that Christ gave him over his pagan rival, Maxentius, at the battle on the Milvian Bridge (AD 312) and not “on his deathbed” by Eusebius of Nicomedia, as modern “scholarship” so likes to assert.

For that service, in gratitude, Constantine bestowed upon St. Sylvester the dignity of wearing a White Cowl, which is symbolic of the purity of the Orthodox Faith and the Radiant Third-day Resurrection of Christ.

Soon after the Church in Rome fell to the Appollinarian heresy, the then-Pope, commanded to do so by an Angel of the Lord who appeared to him in a threatening dream, sent the Cowl to the Patriarch of Constantinople.

Later, a “radiant youth” (also an Angel of the Lord) appeared to the then-Patriarch of Constantinople and commanded that he send the Cowl on to the Holy Russian Land:

“For Old Rome hath fallen away from the glory and the faith of Christ through pride and self-will; in New Rome, which is in the City of Constantine, the Christian faith will likewise perish through Hagarene (Muslim) violence; while upon the Third Rome, which is in the Russian Land, the Grace of the Holy Spirit hath shone forth” … for “there truly is the faith of Christ glorified” … “and honoured … more than anywhere else on earth”.

“The Tale Of The White Cowl” further predicts the establishment of a patriarchate in Rus’ ("… and the great rank of Patriarch … will be given to the Russian Land in its time, and that nation will be called radiant [or: Holy] Rus’").

This prophecy would only find fulfillment in 1589, one hundred thirty six years after the “infidel Turks” broke down the gates of the City of Constantine and a century and a half after the Greeks had betrayed their Faith in Florence.

With the establishment of the Russian Patriarchate, the White Cowl became the headgear of Russia’s Patriarchs (…).

Thus, the Third Rome was spiritually linked with the First, by way of the Second (II [IV] Esdras 11). And, inasmuch as “a Fourth [Rome] there shall not be”, the “Povest’” informs us that “at the end [of the Age] all Christian realms will come together into a single Russian Tsar’dom *, on account of the Orthodox Faith … and the Lord will exalt the Russian Tsar’ over many nations…”.

This prophecy was also passed on to us by, among others, St. Seraphim of Sarov, who informs us that even the antichrist will tremble at the mere mention of the Russian Tsar’!

We know, for example (according to the prophecies of St. Feofan of Poltava) that "*n Russia, the startsy [elders] used to say, through the will of the people, the Monarchy and Autocratic rule will be restored. The Lord has forechosen the future Tsar’.

"He will be a man of burning faith, of brilliant mind and of iron will. First of all, he will bring about order in the Orthodox Church by removing all the false, heresy-preaching and lukewarm hierarchs. And very many indeed – almost all, with few exceptions – will be those removed by him: while new ones, true and steadfast hierarchs, will take their place.

“Through the female line, he will be from the lineage of the Romanovs. Russia will be a mighty state, but only for ‘a short time’. … After that, the antichrist will come into the world, with all the horrors of the end, as described in the ‘Apocalypse’.”

Elsewhere, St. Feofan states:

"Oh, Russia, Russia! How terribly has she sinned before the loving kindness of the Lord.

"The Lord God favoured Russia, and He gave her that which He had not given to a single other nation on earth. And this nation turned out to be so ungrateful.

"She left Him; she rejected Him; and it is therefore that the Lord has given her over to be tormented by devils. The devils took up their residence in the souls of men, and the nation of Russia became possessed; literally, devil-ridden.

"And all the terrible things that we hear about what went on – and what continues to go on – in Russia: all the sacrilege, all the militant atheism and theomachy, – all of this stems from her being possessed by devils.

"But, through the inexpressible mercy of God, this possession will pass and the nation will be healed. The nation will turn to repentance; to faith.

"That will occur, which none expects. Russia will be resurrected from the dead, and the entire world will be astonished.

"Orthodoxy in her will be reborn and triumph. But that Orthodoxy which had existed formerly will be no more.

"The great startsy have said that Russia will be reborn; that the people themselves will restore the Orthodox Monarchy. A mighty Tsar’ will be placed upon the Throne by God Himself.

"He will be a great reformer, and he will be strong in the Orthodox faith. He will cast down the unfaithful hierarchs of the Church.

"He himself will be an outstanding personality, with a pure and holy soul. He will possess a strong will. He will be of the Romanov Dynasty, through the maternal line.

"He will be God’s Chosen One, obedient to the Lord in all things. He will transform Siberia.

“But this Russia will exist only for a very short time. Soon thereafter will come to pass that of which the Apostle John speaks in his ‘Apocalypse’.”**

Thanks for the prayer. Not really any Catholic groups. There is a weekly non-denominational bible study I am thinking about trying though. Non-denomination should mean every Christian- hopefully.
Here’s more info for you about Mary and the Saints from CAF:

As for going to a non-Catholic Bible study group, see this reply by Father Vincent Serpa on the Ask an Apologist forum:

Hope these help!

In every Orthodox Church there is an angel today defending it. If not believe just ask people doing magic, spiritism and such to enter Orthodox Church and you’ll see they would not be able to or they’ll get nausea, vomiting , headaches and such being tormented by devil that cannot stand it. This does not mean these people should stop trying. No, they should fight it and enter it and pray soi they will be allowed to enter and that devil stopping them will be defended.

Also ask people doing spiritism , magic and such drink Holy Water from Orthodox Church. I doubt this will happen.
Also you can take Holy Water from Orthodox Church and drink it after an year. Compare that with tap water . Compare Orthodox Holy Water with catholic Holy Water.

Orthodox Holy Water is so effective in determining demonized people from people with damaged nervous system that there was Psychiatric book recommending every patient with mental problems to be offered Holy Water. If patient has damaged nervous problem he will drink it without problems. If patient is demonized he would not drink it, even if you don’t tell him what kind of water you give him. Demon would know it.
