{snip}
The passage from Luke addresses papal authority (primacy). I don’t have a problem with the pope as the head of the Church. I’m not rejecting the pope; I’m looking for the foundation for the belief in his infallibility.{snip}.

Gary
By rejecting his authority to speak without error when teaching the univeral church about faith and morals, you are indeed rejecting the pope.

It also appears that you have made up your mind that no explanation will be satisfactory.

By papal infallibility I mean that, when addressing issues of doctrine or morals, and when addressing the entire Church and when specifically stated that it is his intention that a given statement is to be taken as infallible, the pope is protected from the possibility of error by the Holy Spirit.

No Scripture proving this belief has been produced that I have seen. I have seen scriptural evidence produced for papal primacy but I don’t have a problem with that and they are not the same thing.

I want to see evidence that papal infallibility is true. Let’s stop beating around the bush. Can you show me from Scripture and/or Sacred Tradition that the doctrine is true or not? I don’t understand what the problem is.

Gary
I have scanned the entries in this thread and I would have to tell you, Mr. garysibio, to find a book by Dave Hunt called “A Woman Rides the Beast.” There is quite the extensive discussion of Papal infallabillity in the early chapters and is well worth reading.

I have read other books by Hunt and portions of the one you mentioned. They are utter garbage.

Not true. I acknowledge that Obama is president of the United States but I disagree with him on almost everything.

I agree that the pope is the Vicar of Christ and the earthly head of the Church but that does not mean that he is infallible.

Last week if you had asked me if I believed in papal infallibility I would have said “Of course.” Since then some things that I have read in the Bible have caused me to question that belief. I came here asking for help, specifically, to see exactly what the evidence from Scripture and Sacred Tradition, the foundation (singular since Scripture is really a part of Sacred Tradition) of our faith, for the belief was. I thought that I would find the answer here but, apparently, there is none. At least that is the only thing I can conclude from the lack of any responses other than accusations that I have some kind of secret agenda or that I would automatically reject any explanation.

The book documents that there are only secular (and no scriptural) bases for the doctrine of papal infallibility.

Your ignorance grows!

Mat:16…Mathew 16…Gospel of St Mathew, Chapter 16!!
"Blessed are you, Simon bar Jonah, for FLESH AND BLOOD DID NOT REVEAL THIS TO YOU…but My Father in Heaven who reveals this to you!.."

If you do not understand that passage, say so!

If you understand it but do not believe it, say so!

If you understand it, but want another one, say so!

If you understand it and believe it, but do not think it is INFALLIBILITY proven, then all the other examples and demonstrations will be futile! Every other related Scripture passage and evidence through Sacred Tradition CORROBORATE that passage!

If you ignore or dismiss that passage and move on, protestant theology is your friend!

JC said that His Father - clearly intervenes - into Peter’s head **WHEN He needs to **in order to ensure Peter, only proclaims The Truth Complete, for his brethren to hear!

**Christ establishes His Church ON Peter, knowing The Father will repeat this intervention, EVERY TIME He Desires…and since His Father Is INFALLIBLE, The Pope IS infallible when, and ONLY WHEN, The Father REVEALS to him A Truth for the rest of his brethren to hear! **

Note that they just have to HEAR it! All, like us, are free to accept and follow, or reject and ignore.

Read the rest of the passage and see what else Christ gives Peter AFTER Peter clearly shows that ‘his mind’ has favour with The Father!

How can a man, ANY man, a created creature !!!..be given, LITERALLY, the power / authority of Heaven!!!
**"…whatever you bind here on earth, WILL be bound in Heaven. WHATEVER you loose here on earth, WILL be loosed in Heaven." ** !!!

You’re either Divinely Guided, Divinely Protected…or…uhmm…BOTH!

If you cannot connect the dots from there, the issue of infallibility is the least of your worries.

Bravo Sir! :clapping::clapping::clapping: You are quite correct about that.
The book documents that there are only secular (and no scriptural) bases for the doctrine of papal infallibility.
To me that infallibility just makes sense when Our Lord plainly states and “18 And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.” (Matthew 16)

Look at the authority given there! Why would He have done so if it was not meant to endure to the entire church through the office of Peter. (It’s the same with John 20:21-23)

The fruit of the “Reformation” also speaks for it because the only other option is theirs which opened up the modern cascade of errors that began with Sola Scriptura and have given birth to so very many more.

The n-Cs have no authority, and since Sola Scriptura is not itself found in the Word of God, (which is their appeal for authority…) then they flounder in every manner of error that the minds of men can imagine. 🤷 That’s just how it is.

**Papal Infallibility ** is a good article on this topic. It most certainly is scriptural.
Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.

Hunt assumes the entirely unbiblical premise of sola scriptura of course, so it is certainly ironic he would argue this.

Given the thesis of that entirely unscholarly work is that the Catholic Church is the “whore of Babylon,” one can be justified in being skeptical of his objectivity. Such a person certainly would not consider any arguments made from Scripture because he had already made up his mind that it cannot be true.

If Hunt told me the sun rose in the east this morning, I’d still check for myself. He is not a credible source for anything. His denial of the doctrine is probably the strongest evidence for it that has been presented so far.

While humorous, we need to be careful in phrasing. Otherwise someone might be led to think that Hunt’s denial is the strongest evidence, which is of course false.

Of course a denial of evidence from an unreliable source cannot prove the opposite of what is denied. However the lack of credibility of the detractor can be used to show that the claims have no support.

In other words, Hunt’s lack of reliability demonstrates that those who use his arguments have no basis for their claims

You are not the first to mention this passage but it hasn’t changed any since the last person used it. Apparently you are the one having trouble understanding it. There is nothing in the passage which mentions a thing about St. Peter being infallible. Earthly head of the Church, yes but nothing on infallibility. I don’t have a problem with the pope as the leader of the Church.
JC said that His Father - clearly intervenes - into Peter’s head **WHEN He needs to **in order to ensure Peter, only proclaims The Truth Complete, for his brethren to hear!
I wish the passage did teach all this. It would resolve my problem. However you are reading all this into the plain text of the passage.
Christ establishes His Church ON Peter, knowing The Father will repeat this intervention, EVERY TIME He Desires…and since His Father Is INFALLIBLE, The Pope IS infallible when, and ONLY WHEN, The Father REVEALS to him A Truth for the rest of his brethren to hear!
Again, you are reading quite a bit into this passage. None of this is in any Bible I have.

I’ve addressed Matt 16 before so I won’t go over it again. I just don’t see infallibility there.

I agree that infallibility would certainly be good and useful but that doesn’t prove it exists. Following your logic we would all be infallible since it would be useful for all of us to be without theological error.

Gary

In that entire passage, all you see is the appoinment as head of The Church?

The Father gets into Peter’s head, and declares that Jesus is ‘The Christ! Son of The Living God’!…and apparently that is up for OPEN DISCUSSION?

God’s own declaration, out through Peter’s lips can be…what ?! May be infallible? What of Scriptures and any of the authors? God may have spoken through them?

Peter and Thomas are the only ones who make the declarations that ‘makes’ us Christians! But according to Christ, only one of them spoke from Divine ‘Interference!’

I say ‘your ignorance grows’ and you add to your Ignore list? You do have a sense of humour.

A Pope** closed the canon **of Scriptures! Since he is not infallible in your eyes when he does ‘stoopid’ things like that, maybe there should be more books in there; or less; or the whole thing can be biffed!

See the back of my head? That’s me ignoring you.

God worked directly through each of the Scripture authors. This is an example of God getting into Peter’s head. God was in the head of each of the Scripture authors as they wrote. But each of their descendants are not considered infallible as Peter is.

To the OP a study of the papal bull speculatores domus israel will prove once and for all that there is NO such thing as papal infallibility.

I looked for the text of the papl bull you mentioned but scrolling through a few pages of Google didn’t turn up a copy. From what was there I gather that it was a statement from the pope saying that the Earth did not move which, we now know, is wrong.

I don’t believe that this disproves the belief in papal infallibility because it deals with a matter of science and that violates one of the conditions necessary for a statement to be considered infallible. (Infallible statements must pertain to doctrine or morals. Scientific statements are neither.)

I do not claim any particular expertise in this area but, based in what I have been taught in the past, papal bulls were not directed to the entire Church, they were more local. Since infallible statements must be targeted at the entire Church, this would also eliminate this particular document as evidence against the belief.

However, as I mentioned, I was not able to find the text of this document. If anyone knows where I can find it, please let me know. If it indeed does claim to be binding on the entire Church, I would have to reconsider my position that it is not valid evidence regarding the doctrine.

You are all proving the truth of scripture: 2 Timothy 3:7 – Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

I see you folks in endless discussion of this or that and nothing ever gets through your defenses. You love to banter back and forth, citing this verse or that, and nothing is accomplished. (Unfortunately, that includes me also, for here I am aiding and abetting.)

As for Matthew 16:18, the entire Bible teaches the depravity of man, that his heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.

Psalm 118:8-9
8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.
9 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.

I believe Jesus knows better than to build His church on some man. It is more likely that the words of Peter tell us what is the “rock” that is being referred to. “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”

Throughout the Bible, the only person who is equated with the solid rock, the sure foundation, is Jesus.

Luke 6:46-49
46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

Jesus is the rock. We were formed from the dust of the earth.

1 Corinthians 10:4
4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

Genesis 2:7
7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
