Questioning the faith and everything

So, remember when I posted about my Chihuahua, Kitty? Well, she didn’t (or hasn’t) come back. I don’t know how, but that got me questioning if my prayers where heard by God: Kitty has been with me for most of my life, and to just lose her like that one day before my birthday is heartbreaking and devastating.

I pleaded for God to bring her back to me, that I would honor Him more if He did so, but Kitty has not come back, and I concluded that God might not be real. I went to Quora to see the arguments from both atheists and religious people, and I’m believing more in materialism.
My older brother is an atheist, but he doesn’t seem to be that emotional anyways, but I don’t know how he really is affected by materialism because I barely see him at home or anywhere else.

Honestly, I am so scared. Materialism says that the only thing there is, is pretty much matter and nothing else, that our consciousness is just molecules that evolved from evolution. Someone on Quora said that thinking you have a soul is kinda like asking: “How do boats float if they’re made of iron?”
It also says evolution has no specific point, that the Universe may or may not have a heat death, and that our consciousness just disappears once we die.

Others comment that Jesus would be horrified at what the religion has become, they say the Bible was written 30 years after Jesus died and thus memories are less likely to be accurate to what really happened. They have also criticized other religions, but Christianity is more criticized due to being more common, I’m not sure.
Others say that trust was part of evolution because ancient tribes had to do so in order to survive, without others, you can’t survive.

I also saw answers that how can we believe in Jesus and the Holy Trinity instead of the many thousands of gods that may be “invented. How can we be sure which is the TRUE religion? If Christianity (especifically Catholicism) is true? What are the best reasources for science that confirms which one is?

Please, I don’t want a Universe like that. I wanna have faith, but materialism is telling me it’s useless.
It devastated me.

I talked to my mother, who’s a devout Catholic (she runs a place where children go to learn about the Bible), and she tells me she believes in Catholicism because:
  1. She was raised with that faith
  2. It gives her tranquility
  3. She finds it hard to believe our consciousness is just molecules, because “Where are we?” as in consciousness. Is soul interchangeable with consciousness? Many think so.
She gave me a book called “The Cabin” by WM. Paul Young, and hopefully it’ll calm me down from materialism stuff.

Can you give me any answers to the arguments I said I encountered on Quora? I really want to believe in Jesus, but with what I read and such, I can’t.

How can we know we have a soul, instead of BEING the soul?

son, listen. i understand your heartbreak about losing your dog.

i’ve been there. i won’t bore you with stories of how i’ve lost my beloved dogs

everything from old age to disease to avoidable accidents

it really has nothing to do w/ religion or catholicism

owning a dog never has a happy ending; unless you rescue one when you are 75 yrs old or so

take a time to mourn; then rescue another dog

trust me on this…

What if satan is driving the dog away to make you lose faith in God?

My cat turned my stove knob on a year ago and burnt down my apartment while I was at Sunday Mass - I believe satan may have influenced him.

Remember when Jesus cast the devils out of the Gadarene demoniac? They went into a herd of pigs and caused them to run off a cliff.

The devils can influence nature, animals, and humans.

Was he a Muslim or a Gnostic?

The “substitution/twin hypothesis” started out as a gnostic heresy and ended up becoming an integral tenet of Islam.

Sounds like he believed in a mishmash of gnosticism and New Age.

I’ve met those types before.

what created this matter? break it down into its smallest part and where did it come from?

you can believe an inanimate material has always existed or that something created it. that something is God.

This seems like a completely emotional thing. Emotions tend to be irrational.

So, first, calm down. Are you young? You say you’ve always had this kitten.

Is that really the best Quora atheists had to offer?That’s like YouTube sound bytes, not very rational or well thought out.

Materialism is simply not feasible. There must be a metaphysical reality behind this world which passes away. There is only One ultimate metaphysical reality. God is greater than the pagan false gods, there’s not even a comparison, most of them might as well be immaterial aliens. We believe God to be much greater than these things. It’s really obvious once you catch on to what He is.

Your mom seems to have some emotional responses too, but her point on consciousness makes sense. There is simply no way for matter to naturally know of its own existence, contemplate abstract thoughts.

Look through New Advent, the encyclopedia. Stay away from social media until you’re a little earlier.

Why do some ppl have their same prayer answered and yours not? Where do animals go when they die? Do animals have souls? What is a soul?
Kitty may have died before circumstances happened where she could get home. Animals will leave when they feel death coming on.
They, usually, lay down and go tI’m sorry for the loss of your Kitty.
Your life force, your Spirit is you! You feel your energy. Our bodies are costumes we wear and have to repair till it stops. Photos have been taken of accidents. At a few of them, a white mist is seen rising from the body. There are Christian scientists.( the actual scientist, not the religion)
God hears and. answers all prayers. He answers all prayers. The answers can be YES, NO, WA
 
It’s a book others have told my mom to buy. Why is it problematic though?

Well, on March 15th it’s the 14th anniversary of Kitty coming home with us, and I’m currently 19 years-old.

I would like to know why you think the Quora atheists don’t have much to offer. I’m not at expert at apologist is but I’m just curious. Some of the answers have links that have research data (and I clicked and read most of them, which is why I assumed them to be true).

Yeah, my mom can be emotional, but you made a good point in how matter can’t know of their own existence. My mom is taking me to talk to a priest soon.

Really talk to parents. They are not stupid.
Take RCIA course. They discuss wonderful stuff there and answer question. Go to Bible Study at your church. After 2 years of learning what we believe, than let the world confuse you.
Questions are good.But you must be careful whom you ask.
In fact, if atheists kept asking WHY? They wouldn’t be atheists. They think they have arrived at their destination…That’s troubling. When we stop asking why.
Think:Could it be a hoax or con game?
What material benefit did they gain. Money, mansions, great positions.???
Jesus is Real. Rome has writings w Jesus mentioned as a Jewish rebel inciting riots. Pilates journals would have him in them.
His message is recorded. But, is He God??
Why keep talking and getting Pharisees and Rome mad??If he gets arrested His message is done.He had a brutal death just to open up heaven for you and me.So He’s Dead! Now, Apostles were scared and hiding. Preaching was done.
But after Pentecost and Holy Spirit, they ran out of room preaching the message and story of Jesus’s Ressurection. No fear.

BUT, no money, no church buildings or mansions. No great jobs offered. The were persecuted, imprisoned, beaten and martyred. In the first three centuries=torture and death. It’s not a job I’d take on. The MESSAGE was LIFE AFTER DEATH and a GOD WHO LOVES YOU. On that thread of hope. Millions walked into arenas as lion food, were crucified and set on fire to light the City of Rome. So, this rumor lives on for 2018 yrs. What a miracle…
Go to mass, have confession, talk to Priest and get communion. FEEL HIS PRESENCE. Surrender to His love. Ask for guidance from ppl that love you. It will be good.

I am going off of what you have said the Quora people said. They are just not good arguments, but seem more like sound bytes that are not conducive to actual thought on the subject.

Yep! Her original name was “Reina” (Queen in Spanish) but according to my family, one of my cousins preferred the name “Kitty”. I got her when I was 5 years-old, so I never really judged the name itself. I just know I started liking “Kitty” much more than “Reina”.
Our second dog was named by my little brother. I wanted his name to be “Kirby” but my brother insisted on “Harry”. With time, I preferred that name as well ^^.
