Questions about "Absolution"

1- If a person goes to confession for the first time and involuntarily omits a mortal sin (or one that was found out to be a mortal sin later after education) that was not known at the time or remembered at the time, even though an examination of conscience was done, do they need to go back to confess that sin or is it absolved with the others? I understand that this may remove the past sin not confessed from the “mortal sin” category.

2- If a person goes to confession and purposely withholds a mortal sin, are the other sins confessed absolved?

1. If a person ommits a sin unintentionally it is still forgiven and it is absolved with all the others. This can happen if someone forgets, for example, or if the priest asks a clarifying question and you lose track. While it is a worthy thing to confess the sin at your next Confession, it isn’t required for the validity of the Sacrament.
2. If you intentionally ommit a mortal sin, the confession is invalid. Nothing is absolved.

I was under the impression that even though the sin has been absolved, it still needs to be confessed the next time you go to confession, and before next receiving communion. Go to your priest and ask him about it.

1.Yes such was not hidden…it can thus be “indirectly” absolved with the others…it was just forgotten etc. But it it was a mortal sin (not something that was grave matter but not mortal at the time due to lack of full knowledge etc) then one is “obliged” to confess it in the next confession …after one remembers of course. It is to be submitted directly to the keys in number and kind.

Yes it still needs to be confessed in the next confession if it was mortal. But one does not need to abstain from Holy Communion in the meantime for that reason.
