Wow, thank you all for your replies. 🙂 I’ll be reading all of the links, too.

Sonic,
Let me explain something that might make your reading and research a little easier.

The Church is comprised of 3 interactive parts:

The Church Militant… That is us here on earth.
The Church Suffering… Those are the souls in purgatory, suffering to purify themselves to be fit for the kingdom of heaven and finally
The Church Triumphant…Those sould who have already made it into heaven.

We believe that all parts can interact with each other through prayer. In fact, God commands us to pray for each other and it is pretty clear that he means those who have gone before us as well. Unfortunately the majority of Protestants have removed those books from the Bible that support this. I always find it funny that there is even reference in Revelations to the prayers of the saints in heaven:
Chapter 5:
8 And when he had opened the book, the four living creatures, and the four and twenty ancients fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints: 9 And they sung a new canticle, saying: Thou art worthy, O Lord, to take the book, and to open the seals thereof; because thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God, in thy blood, out of every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation.
Chapter 8:
3 And another angel came, and stood before the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given to him much incense, that he should offer of the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar, which is before the throne of God. 4 And the smoke of the incense of the prayers of the saints ascended up before God from the hand of the angel.

That’s strange. I hold to the Catholic view and I’ve been raised Protestant.
If I’m correct, the Protestant view (I’m not sure how big an umbrella this theory encompasses) is that forgiveness “covers over” our sins. Mankind is still corrupt. What did Martin Luther call it, our souls are “a dung heap covered in snow”?

CM, this might be what Andromeda is referring to.
