Hi, I’d like to make some questions about Free Will. Hope you guys could help me! I’m not an english speaker, hope you guys understand me.

1- Is Free Will Illogic? Because everything we want is something that is good for us, and useful. Even when we are altruistic, it is because it’s gonna be good for someone. And after all we gonna get self-satisfaction. Once we cannot choose something that is 100% bad for us and everybody at the same time. Therefore free will is impossible to exist.

2- What Jesus Means at John 8:32 “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”. and John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” This means that we aren’t completely free on this life? Then we couldn’t be judged by God?

3- They often say in some studies that we cannot choose our sexuality, things we like. I mean, we can’t choose if we’re gonna be hetero, or gay, or anything else. Everything is computed in our Brain. And there wouldn’t be free will. And they say that soon our later science will prove that our conscience is linked with our brain, and that’s gonna be the end of all religions, because they will prove that there is no soul. Is that true?

Thanks.

i think we have a problem in definitions. Free will doesn’t mean that you are free to do anything - clearly everyone has limitations.

Instead free will means that you can make SOME decisions that have real effect on your future and your salvation. Surely, you recognize that everyone makes decisions every day. This is free will.

For the sake of argument, let’s say you meant “we don’t choose our gender,” which is what point I think you are making here (I’ll skip commenting on homosexuality for now). Free will doesn’t pertain to things out of our control, like what gender we are. Free will pertains to the decisions of a sentient human. Therefore pointing out things that are out of our control does not apply to the matter of free will.

Do you mean that Free Will which the Church teaches us, is a Concept which has relation only about our Soul Salvation and God? If it is that, then we still have no free will, because if there was no paradise for us after all, then we are choosing God for our own interest, and not impartially.

Everyone I know acts as if free will exits. It is the basis of much to the criminal law. If our own interest is in line with what God wants for us it is not selfish interest. It would also likely cause us to do things contrary to our self interest, like loving ones enemy.

okay, lets step back a second. If you want to get to heaven, you must freely chose to enter the state of grace through baptism and then you must willingly stay in the state of grace through love of God and neighbor. (love is defined as doing something for someone else without expecting anything in return). And if you fall from grace through sin, you must willingly chose to reconcile with God through the sacrament of reconciliation. You clearly have a choice to do all of these things. You chose to get baptized or not and whether or not to receive the other sacraments. And every day, you make decisions whether to do good or evil, to love others or to love only yourself… So you clearly have free will and it absolutely effects your ability to get to heaven. There is a paradox though. In order to get to heaven, you must love for the sake of God, not for your own sake. This too is a decision you get to make.

If free will is impossible then so is any reason for moral outrage or righteous indignation at some perceived injustice along with any concept of human moral responsibility. Sin doens’t exist, the most heinous crimes are natural for man; the concept of evil is fallacious.
